Looking to get a new cleaning rod for my Pac-Nor. I need at least a 38" rod due to my barrel and action length. What do you guys like ? Anyone use the carbon fiber rods and is it true they're easier on barrels ? Of course, I plan on using a guide but, sometimes, you still get some contact.

No question, carbon is the way to go. I had one in my hot little hands yesterday, but couldn't quite pay the $35 when I have so many rods, already.

The best advice I can offer anyone when buying equipment that is vital in its intended use or nature, is buy the very best equipment suited to the specific task at hand or the best you can afford.
It is a widely accepted fact stated by barrel makers like Gene Shillen(sp?) that absolutely the number one cause of premature barrel wear and or barrels needing to be replaced due to a significant unacceptable loss of accuracy is IMPROPER CLEANING.
I bought at that time what was widely considered to be the best cleaning rods available, J. Dewey cleaning rods. Mine are well over 15 years old and see heavy use and are still in very good shape. Since then though other rods have been made that do not work any better IMHO, but are just that much better design that I would recommend them over my beloved Dewes. One that comes to mind is the Bore Tech rods. Their only advantage over my Dewes is their handle is longer and more comfortable for my large hands.
Unfortunately, carbon cleaning rods did not exist when I bought my Dewey's and the fact I have 6 at around $28.00 ea and they are all in VG-EX shape I simply can not justify spending way over $100 to replace something in perfect working order.
Just make sure the carbon rods you are considering are stiff enough to jet the job done and are durable enough to last for 15-20yrs of hard use. I use to have a carbon fiber short starter for use with my 10ML-II. I say use to because the threaded insert on its end pulled out while I used it to load my 10ML-II. Granted the short starter was most likely not even close in terms of quality , I hope then the carbon rod you are considering, but it something to keep in mind. I now use a 100% brass short starter with a muzzle guard/guide now.
