I see there are some guys hunting Ohio. Can you share any good public land to hunt in Ohio. I now Ohio has many large tracts of public land. Would be nice to get the straight dope on some good ones. On the east side of Columbus. I live in central Pa. that would make it a about a 6 hr. ride to check some places out. I don't mind hiking in to get away from the crouds. Thanks.

Me and Shooter hunted the Wolf Creek Wildlife area a few years ago and it was decent for the early ML season. Quite a bit of managed (mowed) clear cut that they keep in prairie grass. Plenty of parking areas and a free primitive camping area.
Most of the places close to I-70 (like Salt Fork State Park) are pretty full during the gun season. Full of them city boys that sling lead like it is a combat zone.
Then you have all the Wayne National Forest lands around Athens, Ohio which is around 70,000 acres in Athens, Hocking, Morgan, Perry, and Vinton counties. Then east of Marietta there is another 65,000 in Monroe, Noble and Washington counties. Just finding the right spot is tough but there is a ton of deer.

Are you saying you have access to 400+ acres of land to hunt. Oh I see you say its public. I would like to do a late muzzleloader hunt. I know its short notice. I hunted Illinios and New York. Didn't get to hunt Pa. at all. I would like to find a good place to hunt late season In Ohio because of the time line involved. I have a great place to hunt Bear in Pa. If your interested! We long range hunt them hear in the Grand Canyon Of Pa. My crew saw three this year in bear season but couldn't close the deal on any of them. Long range hunting isn't easy. That place also holds some truly big bucks. There far a few between with very low hunting pressure.

Boy that sounds great. Surprised to hear that the hunting presure is light since its close to Cleveland. Does this area show up on the Ohio public lands map. I can Goggle that wildlife area. Thats prbably about a 5 1/2 hr drive. which is not a problem! What type of terrain is this area. Is that near the reclaimed coal fields?

I have got to learn to read! You did say Cleveland. And I wrote Cleveland yet I had Columbus on my mind. I have a friend that lives in Cleveland. Thats really only 4 hours drive for me! If you want to talk more about this area we can email each other. I thanks a lot. Are you tagged out for the year?

Two areas close to me are Egypt Valley, close to 18,000 acres and very close to I 70. Another approximately an hour south of I 70, Consol Energy Powhatan Point Wildlife Agreement Area, 4,000 acres.

Elkman,
There will be reduced pressure on any of the Ohio public hunting areas during the MZ season. There are good populations of deer available in all of them.
I do hope however that you come with a realistic outlook. Unlike the hunting shows would have you to believe there is not a 140 class buck behind every tree.
Two guys from New Jersey, in the my same hotel, came to Ohio for their first time ever this past gun season. They hunted public land, Wayne National Forrest. They saw some deer but no bucks like they expected to see and were a little let down.
You do have a chance at anytime and anyplace in Ohio to see a good mature buck, just please don't think it is a given. The majority or deer killed in Ohio are does and 1-1/2 - 2-1/2 year old bucks.
I can't help you with which public area might be better than another, sorry.
Good luck

Thanks for all the info. I have hunted places in Ohio and Illinios where the score was everything. To me that really wasn't hunting. there is a lot that adds up to a good hunt. I was happier with my little 8pt buck the other week in New York than if I killed a 150 in Illinios. I like to get out and stalk big woods deer. Ohio offers some large tracts of land. the only season I would get to hunt would be the late MZ season.
