My very short season went pretty poorly. I saw some bucks in the area at the tail end of bow season so I expected better...but had to travel for work opening weekend and by the time I got there none to be found.
Two mornings to hunt, didn't see a deer closer than 1/2mi. The property owner was hunting the spot I'd really wanted to and sure enough he shot a 6-pt this morning. As we gutted it I saw a group of does jog into a point of trees on a short ditch that projected into the field 1/2 mile away. I decided to stalk around there in hopes they had stay put.
As I approached a single doe trotted back towards the woods...she looked small so I let her go. I walked up the point and sure enough, three does bust out. I dropped on one knee and bleated, hoping they would pause, but they kept booking. The biggest doe tried to lead them right but the other two went left so she had to cut over toward them. This opened up a steep quartering shot, and I took it, DRT.
The shot was 120-150yds, I knew it would test the mettle of the 200SST as it had to cut some distance through the deer to reach the vitals. It got the job done, but let's say I won't be testing my luck with that type of shot again.
An hour later we returned to pick her up. We parked the truck on the filter strip along the edge of the woods and got out the game cart, talking in normal voices as we figured romping the truck in scared everything. Due to needing to drag the cart and gutting gear I uncharacteristically opted to leave the Savage in the truck.,,,too heavy....
50 yards away...still talking the whole time...the property owner looks up and says "is that a deer?" It was a brown spot I'd seen the whole time but for some reason dismissed. I put up the binos and sure enough, there was a nice 8-pt, watching us come in from under 100yds away. He'd been there the whole time as we unloaded the truck and yapped away! Well, unfortunately he wasn't completely stupid and as I turned to head for my gun in the truck he took off. That will teach me for making a rookie mistake....
