I bought a used laminated factory stock for one of my Savage MLs. The prior owner had bedded it quite well and added the third pillar. I just had my action drilled and tapped so I am going to use the stock after I add an SSS recoil lug. The question: Are the Savage actions held to close enough tolerances that I can just use it as is or am I going to have to sand the glass and skim coat it? I know I can shoot it first to check but am just asking. Thanks

Savage actions all have a slight warp to them and the chances of it being exactly the same is slim. A high spot will give you fits with action screw torque and a low spot doesn't do you any good. You could try but the times I have I always got burned. Skim coats may crack because of being so thin and not getting a good grip on the previous bedding. I would go in a roughly grind out about 1/8" under the action (just knock the old bedding off the tops of the pillars), maybe a bit more behind the recoil lug (remember the sides, bottom and front of the lug because the aftermarket lug may be larger) and re-bed. If the bedding extended forward of the lug I would grind it out also.

jims, the sss lug is significantly larger than the savage, just milled mine out last week in prep for the new barrel. I would take rossmans advice and go at least an 1/8, you have to cut the lug area out anyway so it is just a little extra work for a lot of piece of mind....Bill

Take rossmans advise and have it re bedded. Even if the action isn't warped the machining marks, stamps, whatever will not be the same from one action to the next. 1/8 seems like a good number. I'm curios to what kind of mud are you going to use?

I normally use AccuGel. I mix their aluminum powder in with it. The current bedding material is a light brown material. I am sure if I remove some of it and scuff it up and drill some small holes besides it should bond to it. I knew I had to do some glass work for the thicker SSS recoil lug, I was just "hoping" I could avoid the extra work on the receiver. I pulled the SMI barrel off also and added a spare Sav stainless I had. I also plan to add a Limbsaver recoil pad.

Just a new thought. I have Brownell's inletting Gold. I could put it on the receiver and bolt it in place. It would indicate somewhat if there were high/low spots. Worth the effort?

FAGATABOUTIT Jims. Just do as Rossman said and re-bed it. Exact is what you want, not "almost" Richard
