I went to my local gun store an purchased a pound of 4198. Then, on this site, I learned that 4198 is not 4198 is not 4198...
The pound that I purchased is IMR 4198. I wanted a load that was guaranteed to ignight in cold weather and was told that 4198 was the powder. what is the difference between these two powders? Do they work equally well in cold weather? I noticed on a burn rate chart they are listed back to back.
Help! Which to you prefer, and why?

They are claimed to be the same some people say they see a difference, I never really saw much difference, but I also do not load right to the max, with center fire or ML. That is were you need to be careful. It was always claimed the they can vary from lot to lot. I have used mostly IMR 4198 (local co.) and it has never let me down. Hedgdon bought IMR a while back so they may be more equal.

I've only ever used the imr 4198 and it works extreemly well in the various climate ranges that we have in the Great White North. Used with heavier bullets and firm seating is the key. I had better success with hotter primers ie. federals. I recently shot some with my 45 sabotless over my chronograph and experienced some discrepency with velocities compared to H4198 loads. The imr was always claimed to be faster at the same charges but this was not my findings. I actually found velocities slower than the reported Hodgdon loads. I will be getting some H 4198 and do some back to back testing. By the way there is no mistaking the two physically, the imr is gray graphite in colour with longer kernals , the H is light brown in colour with shorter kernals.

I ran back to back tests with these two powders a few months back with my 10/60 duplex (5744/4198) I shoot with a 300 gr. bullet and Win. primers. The load, using H-4198 consistently averages 2460 fps. I shot both powders on the same day with the exact same components and IMR- 4198 averaged 2389 fps. Richard

8-)When I was first comparing H with Imr the later came in a steel can. The load velocity difference was small but apparent. Along the way I had two misfires with Imr-4198 as compared to none for H4198. From that point I used H4198 exclusively.
The maximum loads are also the maximum I shot, not necessarily the maximum safe load. I also admit to never shooting Imr in 45 caliber, only H.
If you shoot Imr 4198 you will be adding to total load knowledge because of the obvious limited data taken so far.

I too got some mainly cuz it's local for me too, but thinking the difference with hodgdon were too minute to sway me the other way. In looking for load info I'm seeing mostly H4198.. I guess only time will tell the tale how it'll work for me
joe21a where are yu in ny?

One of the guys here told me he believes IMR is cleaner burning than the H series and prefers it for that reason. In his limited testing he has not seen any significant difference in velocity between the two grain for grain, possible lot to lot discrepancies could account for that though.
