I have been a fan of the power rod, however now its sold off to TC, as far as I can tell they only have them for TC rifles, which are much longer than the 22" unit the savage needs, there is a universal powerrod, however it is thin and looks like it would bend and break if used very much, the old regular powerrod was the way to go and I can't find one, any ideas

If you search ram rods you will find a topic to make your own. I also keep a copy of the link if you would prefer to buy. These are by far the best price I have found. rmcoxyoke.com/catalog.htm

I'm sure this is not what you are looking for but I'm posting it here as general information for anyone who might need a good strong ramrod in a pinch or at a budget price. It's from one of my postings on the old board from 2004. BTW: I'm still using these same ramrods. Mel "If you need one immediately and have nothing available locally, go to Wally World and get a 3 piece Outers Universal All Gauge Shotgun Cleaning Rod. Loc-tite the middle section and the bottom section together. This will give you an aluminum rod about 22-1/2 inches long (just a tad longer than the Savage barrel. I've had no trouble seating seat both SST's and XTP's with the ones I use. For cleaning I screw the top section on to make a full length rod and use shotgun brushes and swabs. I started using one of these when I bought my first 10ML in late 2000 because nothing was available locally. I'm still using it and bought another one just like it for my second Savage. Initially, I used a short starter with a hole drilled in the round knob to fit the end of the rod and save my palm. Eventually, I had a machinist buddy cut and rethread the rods so they are a little shorter than the Savage barrels. Later yet, I cut off and modified the top section ( the part with the tee handle) to serve as a short starter/palm saver." Rangeball,
Yes, it's a solid aluminum three piece rod and is about the same OD as the stock Savage ramrod. I use 20 gauge shotgun brushes and swabs for cleaning for the most part.
I initially figured on it being a temporary solution and assumed the aluminum bottom end wouldn't hold up for very long against the force of pushing and seating the bullet firmly against the powder charge. Apparently I was wrong. Both rods are still holding up after all these years and I do a lot of shooting during the year. I use nothing but SSTs anymore and it seems to fit perfectly over the pointed tip. I no longer have the box for either rod so don't know the model number any more.
One of the two rods came from WalMart and later I picked up a couple of more at a gun show for practically nothing.
The only problem I had was that the top end of the rod is threaded and I had to devise a way to save my palm. At first I drilled a hole in the round knob of my short starter and used that to push on. Eventually I added some plastic knobs to the upper end, small enough to fit under the barrel when the rod is in the spindles for palm savers. I'm sure even better solutions could be devised by someone with a little more ingenuity.
Hope this helps,
Mel

Thanks for the info Mel. Not sure what kind of ram rod I'm getting from SMI, other than it's a break down. Good to know about the walmart option.
