OK......so I sell a Unertl scope to one of our moderators, pack it up nicely and take it to my UPS store. Since this is a looooooong scope: 24" worth, I do not want it getting bent in shipment. In my way of thinking, a three sided box is more rigid than a four sided carton ? So, I cut three 4" x 24" pieces of 1/4 luan plywood sections. Bubble wrap the scope and place the three pieces of wood around it. Then securely tape to form a 2' long three sided box. I then form cardboard around the wood structure to make it look like a 3 sided box......again securely tape, address anhd bring to my UPS store. They go thru their thing at the computer and it spits out the receipt with my cost on it............$28.25 . So I say to the guy.....Wooooooooooh! Three weeks ago I sent a rifle barrel, which was easily twice as heavy and a longer box, to the very west coast of Oregon (Oh, they still have not found the barrel) and it cost me $21.00 with $400 ins. Today, I send this lighter, shorter package to Illinois with #300 ins. and it cost me $7.00 more? What gives? He showes me the receipt and points out an "ADDITIONAL HANDLING CHARGE" of $11.75. He says, its not my rules, its the company! Three sided does not conform to their "standard" package. Wow! Go figure. I almost wanted to take it USPS or bring it home and repackage it. But just said *&%^$#@ under my breath and left. Just be forewarned if your shipping an "odd" shaped package. Richard

Man, some people just can't catch a break. At least they didn't say it was not an approved package, and you would have to package it inside another box.

Richard-I wonder if our Pacnor barrels were at a higher rate? Mine came packaged three sided.

Richard, did they ever say if a tube/cylinder package was considered an odd size for shipping?
