Answer to a Question please. Are the Douglas barrels from SMI and the Douglas barrel for the NULA one of the same.

Ive never seen a SMI in person but the contours appear different. A NULA is built to be light weight and its contoured to meet that goal. Melvin uses Douglas Premium barrels but IIRC Douglas offers at least 2 grades of "Premium" barrels. Something like Premium XX ect.
That is why so far i have avoided slower burners that will put more pressure further down the bore. Im keeping the pressure spike closer to the breach with the faster powders he recommends. I would die if i bulged my barrel.
IMO Melvin holds tolerances to a very tight standards and they are hand lapped in house (according to my phone call) but ive seen nothing to suggest a SMI Douglas barrel isn't or couldn't be as good.
If you call NULA, Melvin usually answers the phone and is glad to answer your questions. Just DON'T ask about sabotless. Don't mention it to SMI either.
BTW i am a bit biased as a NULA owner and couldn't be happier with my purchase. The first time i pushed a sabot down the tube was like WOW....smoooooooth.

When I ordered my SMI years ago I asked Dan if the barrels are lapped. He said they are so smooth they don't have to be lapped. Mine loads very smooth, saboted and sabotless.

I cannot add much to this thread other than to say my very newly purchased SMI is what I would consider a heavy "bull" contour. This is on an Encore frame. I do not know what grade this is and not sure what they do with their H&R conversions.

I wonder if SS vs CM steel plays a part in achieving "the feel". Ive heard SS is a bit harder to rifle and get that same smooth engraving without the "chatter". One thing is for sure,,,,Douglas barrels and smokeless have renewed my interest in non SS barrels. I may even use one on my Savage 50cal but it seems to shoot fine just the way it is now.
