What's the lowest dose of H4198 you think you could use and get reliable ignition with a 300gr sabotless in a .45? What would expect the FPS to be at this minimum level?

I started out at approximately 48gr IIRC. Neither, the 300 XTP or SST grouped tight until I got up to 53.5gr which is approx. 2300fps depending on temps.

Thanks Dave. Say someone wanted to shoot a 300gr sabotless from a .45 about 1800 fps. What would be a good temp insensitive powder at what amount?

5744 possibly but I have no experience with that powder.

a couple years ago i used some H4227 with a 300xtp sabotless in an SMI i had. with the short breech plug i had no hang fires or misfires, the day i shot this load was single digits and teens. all the range work i did with it that winter seemed fine. i wasn't sure of a max load so i stopped at 28 gr which gave me an avg of 1764fps. hope that helps

New territory here for sure. My money would be on the AA5744. I have shot 8 lbs of it from 34grns to 45grns. It goes bang everytime in every condition.. Re-7 would be my second choice ONLY because I have not shot it as extensively as 5744. It should be a prime candidate as it is a double based powder as well and you will get more speed with less pressure...

if yer looking to stay around 1800 i'd have to agree with tar about 5744 being probably your best bet

I must mention that the 5744 I shot was in the .50 cal. Since 5744 builds pressure fast I would start low and work your way up and use your chrono!
