had a few kinks along the way with this build.. no more waiting around cuz this is my dream rifle of sorts. barrel is an oversized pacnor 45, 25" with a 1-20 twist. action is rem mohawk. scope is vortex viper 6.5-20. last attempt to shoot i was not getting a good seal on the cut cases I made and resulted in hang fires and miss fires. wanted to also give thanks to daved for taking the time to help me with this and other questions i've had along the way . spent the weekend at camp and this was yesterdays results.. first two targets were saboted loads, first being nosler 210gr .410 resized to .403 and in a crush rib over 56gr H4198. nothing special so i stoped at 3. next target was cast bullets from the mold i made, bullet/sabot together weigh 300gr, sized to .401 and used smooth blue over 56gr H4198, also stopped at 3 as this was nothing special. next i shot sabotless, 300gr xtp over 77gr H322 and a veg wad. first 3 were almost in the same hole and i wanted to stop there and do a little dance, but decided we'd go for 5 after that i went to 80gr H322 with same bullet and noticed after a few shots i was seeing what looked like unburnt powder in the cases as they were comming out. im not positive if this group was 4 or 5 shots, but looks like 4. i then changed the vent and shot the next group also with 80gr H322 and the improvement is obvious. then to finish i had 3 primed cases left and so i shot 3 more of the 77gr H322 to see if the newer vent helped at all. the movement of the targets on POI between some groups is me playing with the scope, not change in impact

How much of a difference in the vents when you swapped them out? Or was it just a switch of different maker?
Hope it was a Mohawk and not a 60s run model 600. I always liked the 600 and 660 carbines for close in work, good handling rifle.

thanks guys, couldn't have done any of this without this board and everyone on it i forgot the chrony when i left the night before, but i promise it wont happen again! as far as the vents, they are home made holo-krome. this is the first batch i've made and not tried any hardening on them, maybe thats why it went so fast? holding the vent liner up to an unused vent, the opening was noticibly larger so i tossed it in the woods. if its big enough for powder to get into the case, no need for measuring as far as im concerned! after this fall i'll have that ugly dogleg bolt removed, i have a tactical PTG to replace it and until that bolt is on i can't fit the thumbhole stock i had made for it, also have a 700 timney trigger that will be used with the other stock. so i modified the original stock, adding wood to the forarm, filling the mag hole, cut out the bolt holes on the plastic trigger guard and epoxied aluminum discs i made so the bolts were all solid metal to metal when torqed down, pillar bedded and fit/cut a 700 base to fit the action. also made my own bolt stop out of brass, figured it would add a little bling

That's cause your a "Young'un Greenhorn ;D" They are basically the same action as the XP-100 pistols except they have a magazine versus a solid action. Mohawk..........Very nice rifle and super shooting! You are getting me to think about the "virgin" XP-100 pistol I have sitting in my safe...........complete with Remington's original soft case Richard

Too bad you're going to ditch the dog leg bolt. It's one of the more functional features of the 600/660 Rems. I have (2) .222's a .243 Win; a 6mmRem and a .308. I'd sooner cut off my hand than alter one of those awesome bolt handles. Good Luck with your build.

I have a Rem 600 but ive got WAY too much in it to convert it to a SML. Its basically a Jeff Cooper scout rifle clone made with nearly identical parts except its a .308 instead of a 350Rem Mag. Numrich IIRC carries metal trigger guards if you need one. A quick Google search will find them. Its the ONLY CF ive kept scoped and ready to go. There was a recall on them. If its been fixed, they put a V stamped on the side of the trigger. Awesome guns IMO and it even has its own spot inside of my dads gun safe. I keep it there since he has a far more secure storage and insurance. If i ever find one for a steal, i might not be able to resist though.

this is def one of the ones that was under recall at one point, and does have the V stamped in the side of the trigger. i like the feel of the timney trigger when i fitted it to the action, so i only have the rest of this fall to shoot this factory trigger. the rifle was a 308 and was a good rifle to me, but this was my dream before i knew it was possible. back when my dad got his savage i thought how cool it would be to make my lil remmy into a smokeless something ML. it was a year or so later i found this site and sloooowwwwwly started gathering pieces. probably cuz it took so long is why im not in such a big hurry to get the bolt swapped and in the other stock, im just happy to shoot the thing right now.
Richard, i would love to see you build one off your xp-100 action! i lie to myself all the time and say im going to hunt with this a little, but with the huge barrel its too darn heavy to want to tote around anywhere! a similar barrel on your xp-100 action would be sweet from the bench i would imagine!
