Hello all,
I am sure this has been asked before , so forgive my elementary question.
What do you keep your premeasured powder in while you are hunting or shoot ing at the range? I use to use 35mm film canisters before BP pellets but thought there had to be something better.
Thanks,
ddj

I use these.1 dram/clear 15x45 glass vials. You would be hard pressed to break these. I have sat on them and dropped them with out breaking one in the 10 years I have been using them They are good for up to 62 grns of N120. No static and of you order these specify you want the poly seal lids with them. These work well with the .45 opening. www.pilotvials.com/Screw-Thread-Bottles.html

My personal preference for loading vials and keeping them organized in another container is seen below. It’s been a while since I purchased these and the address was lost when my computer crashed a few months back. Once the vial is loaded I place it in the container with the cap upright. Once used they get returned to the container bottoms up. The container is actually a 12ga shell holder. Also I place a short holding list in the container to let me know what charges are located where. Works for me having 25 powder vials in 1-container and easily organized on a bench. Ed

I use clear plastic test tubes 12x55 mm. It will hold up to 44gr of 4759,5744 & VV N-110. Not big enough for duplex loads. the tube is 2.2" long and .47"OD. It will fit perfect for a 50cal. I can also see if all the powder went into the barrel. www.lcmlab.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=23

I'm with hillbill and DaveW but I use a vacuum line cap from NAPA instead of a valve stem cap. A perfect funnel, no spilling and they work perfect with a .45 or a .50. The neck enters the bore but the case body will not.

I get tubes locally for 35 cents each at a electronics supply place. They have some smaller cheaper ones too but these have the tops attached and will hold 130gr+ of BH209. I use it sometimes too.
The 7mm Mag idea though i really like. What other junk range brass cases would work. Stuff that is Berdan primed so most people don't even pick it up. 8mm Mauser maybe?

Never shot IMR 4198 but I have put as much as 78gr of 10X and 76gr N130. You have to tap the case to settle the powder though. Pretty sure I have got 76gr of H4198 in one also.
These are fired cases BTW, if sized the valve stem cap is too loose.
Also tap the case with a ball starter a couple times before removing the case from the muzzle. Sometimes a kernel or two of powder will creep through the flash hole and lodge inside the spent primer. Probably has zero affect on accuracy but I like to be consistent.

The glass vials I use will NOT break or CHIP. You can store powder for YEARS in them with the poly seal lids. I weigh up 60-70 charges at a time. I would not do that with a slip fit cap of any kind. 2 years ago I stumbled across 4 glass vials of 5744 from the old days in a hunting jacket in my barn. As near as I could estimate they had been in that unheated barn for 7-8 yrs. I took them with me on my next range session and ran them over the chrony and their numbers and accuracy were right there where they should of been. The loads I am currently shooting of N120 are 2 years old from the last batch I weighed up for my .50 I am sold on their worth.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I am concerned about the glass vials being loud if I have 3 or 4 of them in my pocket when I am hunting. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Could you wrap some tape on them or some other sound deadening device. I've seen where others have used a shell/cartridge carrier that slips over the buttstock, you can store 4 or 5 vials in it with no rattle and no fumbling in your pocket either.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I am concerned about the glass vials being loud if I have 3 or 4 of them in my pocket when I am hunting. Has anyone else had experience with this? ddj Several hundred dead deer here and they never heard a thing! I usually just carry them in my pocket. If you are worried about sound you can always use the neoprene cartridge carriers that slip over your stock or the elastic/belt type or if you or your wife are handy sewing you can add the elastic to anything....the possibilities are endless..also most 'possibles" bags have the elastic already in them for speedloaders..take elastic off...respace and you now have enough elastic pockets to accomodate 8 vials. This allows you to keep everything in one bag and handy. Also there is several Coonhunter Supply companies that make Cordura Nylon bags to carry shells, squallers and such in.They will make you a waterproof possible bag to your specs.Send your address via pm and I will send you some vials and you can decide which works best for you. I will take some pics of the bags I have and post them here later.
