Hello, I am new to smokeless ML (and this site) and I am thinking about having a custom gun built for long range deer/elk hunts for next years season. Can anyone recommend a quality gunsmith, provide a recommendation on what to focus on for the build, and possibly show some links to their work? To be honest, I am a little overwhelmed and could use some direction. Thank you for your help! NMhunter

Just to clarify, I am assuming (that's why I'm asking) you are asking about a custom built smokeless ML, correct?
If yes, I'd research the regs in the states that you are planning on using it to make sure that it's built to comply with any state regulations.

Welcome nmhunter, Don't know where you are located but guessing New Mexico? Since you are new to SML I'd reccomend you start with a Savage ML II. Probably the best starter SML available. I was a 40 year ML shooter but when I got my Savage I found that SML is not like shooting black powder and subs in a ML. On the www you can check out NULA, Bad Bull, and Swinglock. since you are new to SML I'd recommend a Savage ML II, scope or open sights, and you can use Blackhorn 209 and full bore ML type bullets in the Savage if need be, it's a very accurate and versatile ML rifle. Randy Wakeman usually has some, or you could go to the originator of the SML rifle, Henry Ball. I think Henrys info or link is at the top of the page on this forum. Or you can contact SMI, also a link on this forum, and they will do a custom barrel for a Encore or NEF etc... Then you can stock it however you like. Or you can get a donor action and then get a barrel from PacNor and whatever stock you want and put it all together. Some info on donor actions/guns in the build/hints/links forum. Lurk around on this site a couple of days and you'll suddenly have ideas overwhelming your head in short order. Most of the guys here with customs have Pacnor barrels on ML IIs or 700s or Ruger #1s or SMI barrels on Encores or NEFs but theres lotsa ways to go. Hope I've helped, I'm sure others will give you another $.02 worth too. I have a stock ML II, second ML II with semi custom barrel and my most custom is a Encore with a converted 45-70 TC barrel. 10 ga

Myself or Hillbill can build you a smokeless from a 700ML, I have a few blue/black synthetics I can build from or possibly find a SS gun to start with.

Thanks guys, Looks like I have alot of homework to do. I am headed off for a ML hunt in CO in the woods where I grew up next week, so I won't be able to respond. Right after that I have a traditional deer hunt near Taos, NM. I live in Los Alamos, NM and have been shooting a muzzleloader since I was a kid. I am super excited to get my daughter into it, but she needs a couple more years. Thanks again for all your input!
