Last week Savage shooter talked about the PT's that TG ran.
Yesterday, I took a closer look at just how they performed for me in my 26" PN Savage.
The day was about as perfect as could be. Temperatures stayed in the 65 to 70* range. It was overcast to the point of "almost raining" and the wind was pretty close to zero. And, I was with my two shooting buddies Herman and Bill.
I started out by attempting to shoot a group with H-4198 at 62 gr. under a 200 gr. SABOTLESS XTP along with a .060" veggie wad but it did not happen. I re-seated the bullet and put another primer on and again it did not go off. I then removed the bolt and unscrewed the BP with the muzzle facing the groud. I did this so the powder would not get into the action. With the plug totally unscrewed, there is no way to grab it to pull it out? "Light bulb" comes on in head.............I take a cleaning rod and screw on a .30 cal. bore brush. Insert into the primer pocket of the BP and gently pull it up and out . I was then able to push the load out thru the muzzle. The powder had that golden brownish color to it indicating the flame had scorched it but did not ignite it. Note: I have been using Win. 209 primers since I started with the smokeless ML's four years ago and have had almost zero problems and that is with some 4,000 shots.
Anyway, I scrub the sabotless thing and go ahead and fire a five shot group with saboted 200 gr. Nosler HP's and the same 62 gr. of H-4198. Hoping to mimic the great group Howa shot last week. It did not happen Even the best 4 out of five went in 1.4".
So now on to the main part of my testing: (All 200 gr. Noslers with blue smooth Harvester sabots today)
Group #2 10/50----4759/H-4198 While not quite as good as Howa's, never the less, pretty decent. In this case, Tar, shots 1,2&3 were the same size as shots 3,4 & 5. Very low ES of 22
For group #3, I substituted N-110 for the starter (same ratio)
As figured, the velocity went up by about 35 fps to 2690. The ES increased to 36 (but still acceptable for ML) with the group size staying the same In this case, shot #1 was out of the group and 2,3,4&5 were tight?
For group 4 I went to 9/53----4759/H-4198 Here the velocity again went up to 2744 with an ES of again, 22 fps. This group however, opened up some to 1.8" but still put three in a half inch---shots 1, 2 & 4? #3 went out as did #5?
In group #5 I substituted N-110 for the starter (ratio the same) and again, the velocity went up from 2744 to 2789 with the ES up to 44 fps. A note about this group........I knew another group of shooters on the range were getting ready to retrieve targets and I did not want to interrupt my group so, I decided to shoot a marathon. I fired the five shots in exactly eleven minutes. My cooling times went from 45 to 60 seconds down to around 20 seconds. Just enough to remove some of the heat. Now whether the groups size was because of the heat or because the barrel did not like the load...........? Still, I was able to keep five shots in 1.7" and no blown sabots. In this group shots 2,3&5 are about as good as 1,5&3? As I say, no rhyme or reason to the clustering?
Finally, I wanted to take the best load out to 300 yards so I used load #2. With the zero I had been using at 100 yards, I then dropped down to the third stadia line and was still 3.5" low. Now mind you, there was little if any wind but still the group ran horizontal with virtually no vertical. Here shots 1,2&4 are the winner?
So right now, I am likin' the 10/50 duplex with 4759 as the starter and H-4198 as the main charge. Today, for me? the single powder of 62 gr. of H-4198 did not want to cooperate Yet it has shot better on occasion. I was not happy with the misfire
