I purchased one of the new hex head breechplugs for my Savage and installed it last weekend. Problem is bolt won't close when there is a primer in it. A quick measurement shows overall length of plug is fine but the primer port hole in the front of the plug measures 6 thousands smaller in diameter than original plug. Anyone else run into this problem?

You need a size "C" drill bit.

SW you are the man I learned this from you and it has worked great for me.
C size is 0.242 and you can ream the pocket out by hand, but with the new hex head plugs which seem to be a bit tighter I had to use a pair of pliers to do it, but no drill needed.
Hope this helps,

yes the pocket on the new plugs is tighter for some reason but as has been stated a "c" bit will fix you right up. you can clamp the bit in a vise and turn the plug by hand to desired depth.
will fix your problem, have had to do the same at least a dozen times....

This seems to be a recurring problem with the hex head plugs. A buddy just had a conversion done and used the Savage hex head plug and it needed the "C" bit treatment too. I have a virgin plug for "field expedient" repair situations emergency stuff like need one in the middle of hunting season etc... Just checked it and it needs a bit of opening too. Now one less thing to go wrong. 10 ga

It' a good thing that this problem was posted. My new ML-II has a hex head BP and I just today changed my two other ML's to a hex head BP. I just checked all three. The new one works fine,my used gun works fine, My HB-ML-II won't close and my spare BP will not fit a primer.......... Thanks guys you just saved me from a frustrating day at the range

is the 'C' size bit a standard size I can readily buy at the hardware store?

Bluedog, I could not find it at any local hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot or harbor frieght. I had to order one from McMaster Carr.

Only way I could get it to was to order online and I ended up getting a few of them and then selling to other members on the board.
Hope this helps,

The older Savage Breechplugs didn't have this problem--Mine will take CCI's or Win's. Why wouldn't the new plug be same dimensions? I think its ignorant to buy a new plug--then have to bore it out for it's intended purpose?? Maybe I'm missin somethin? Mark
