I'm in a similar dilemma, but looking for a competent gunsmith to do the machining. Two almost went for it, but backed out. Seriously considering ordering a Brux blank with a special contour, but need the machinist 'smith found first. I don't want a barrel sitting around here that can't be used.

The past, present and future of smokeless muzzle loading is right here. Read all you can and don't hesitate to ask questions. Talk to you soon. Jeff

Yes his work is top notch and if i like my Savage/Pacnor DD 45, i may ask him to work his magic after the season dies down a bit. I know his builds shoot and he takes pride in doing them. I came close to making an offer on it too but im glad you got it. I didn't want my first leap into a 45cal SML to cost that much even though it sure is worth it. Compared to high end customs, its a steal!!!!!!!!! Ive got Lukes Savage/Pacnor DD 27" coming instead and will be sending out my payment tomorrow. Im actually a bit nervous since i love my Knight 45s and will likely end up selling 2 of them and keep 1. I will be down to 3 smokers and 3 SMLs. Without this site i would have never considered buying a 45cal SML. Im very cautious and want to see load data with pressure traces. Dougs has made my transition from BH209 to REAL smokeless much more comfortable by providing this data from many members. Congrats and best wishes with your BEAUTIFUL 45.

You'd better start on locating a recoil lug as well. That can take longer than the barrel . I wouldn't be surprised if Bill is hording them ;D. Good luck on whatever you decide and be patient.

Pucker factor,,,being told all your life NEVER use smokeless and you dont normally. Coming from a reloading back ground though makes it a littler easier to understand. You fear what you dont understand. Dougs helps me treat it just like i would CF reloading with all the data. I was kinda ho hum with my Savage 50 even though it likes a great load. I got the NULA 50 and got more interested. Then the 45cal SML itch HAD to be scratched. I nagged Omega to get a SMI 45cal conversion for his Encore but he got a Rem/McGowen conversion that is just as nice.....i guess

Most are replacing the stock recoil lug (fits between the barrel shoulder and the action) which looks like a beaver's top front teeth with a solid tapered edge model that costs around $30. The replacement provides more surface area to transfer recoil to the stock and is easier to bed (i.e,. comes apart easier when the bedding compound has set up). The 700 ML uses a .186" lug. The thickness is important for properly headspacing the breech plug. Midway has had them on backorder for a long time. www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=156560

I didn't see your gun but if your gun is put together then it doesn't need another recoil lug. When are you going to shoot your new gun?

Pull the action out of the stock and you will know instantly.

Rusty, Your gun has a SSS .240 recoil lug, 3rd action screw added, all pillar bedded with Devcon 10110 plastic steel bedding compound. Jeff

Rusty, I shaped this stock with as dual grip it has a palm swell and open comb at the grip to allow for an A5 style option. This also allows easy access to the top tang safety. Personally I think your going to really like the pistol grip style thumb hole it's different than the standard Boyds thumb hole most factory stocks come with.

OK, after re-reading this post it went from a Rem 700 ML dream to a Savage reality. You can use any size recoil lug on the Savage and adjust the headspacing by screwing the barrel in or out because the Savage has a barrel nut and you can lock it in place. The .186 recoil lug I mentioned is only necessary for the 700 ML that lacks a barrel nut and is tightened to the barrel shoulder. Final headspacing is done by carefully shortening the breech plug. Sorry for any confusion caused by this.

All the custom barrels I have dealt with have been accurate, some just take a little TLC.
