Well, Boarhog sent me a message wondering where the results were of the new Rem. ML? I said, as of right now, there are no impressive results . OK, let me say that there were a few glitches that have to be ironed out...........whether these relate directly to accuracy or not remains to be seen. I think everyone has seen guns that shoot right out of the box and others that need tweaking before they shoot to their potential.
#1, I have a Sightorn 6x24 scope which had been shot on my .50 in the past and do not know its reliability? I assumed it was OK but you know how that goes. I have bolt/primer thing going on also. When I head spaced the barrel, I made it quite tight. The bolt does close OK, but with NO clearance. When I put the primer in, it closes noticeably hard but will go . It also seems like the primers go into the breech plug somewhat hard. I may have to open up the inside a bit (yes, I have the "C" drill bit and also a boring bar on the lathe ) I may have to cut the end of the BP back a few thou. for a little more clearance.
Moving on the bolt itself, I was having problems getting the primers out after firing? I know the clearance Hunter puts in these bolt noses is fairly tight. So after firing, on most shots, I had to loosen the "finger" screw and pull the bolt and tap the primer out on the side edge of the lead sled . A few didn't want to come out that way and I had to grab the primer with a small vise grip then tap the vise grip with a hammer to slide the primer out of the bolt nose. Mind you, as you can see from my loads, these were not primer blowing loads? 2700 to 2800 fps both single and duplex. Actually the higher velocity duplex loads would occasionally allow me to remove the primer with my fingers..........Not every one, but a few? The back of the primers look normal. No blow by around the cup or piercing of the primer. Just frigging tight!. To compound the situation, the Remington action only permits you to just about get your finger slightly behind the primer. At that, you are only picking at the end of it which tips it sideways, canting the base and making it harder to slide out? This is a feature I am not thrilled with. On the Savage action, it is on pen on both sides and you can use your other finger to help wiggle a stubborn primer out Now maybe if I give a little more head space, this situation will improve? Anyone having this problem with their Rem. ML's?
Needless to say, this made the range session a PIA. So this along with the uncertainty of the scope's condition, my groups were less than stellar.
The rifle was bore sighted at home and one shot at a clay bird was able to get me on paper at 100 yards with several shots to adjust the scope relatively close. Once close I decline to be playing with the adjustments until such time as my groups are established. I did make an adjustment between the second and third target.
After these five shots or so, I wanted to shoot Tar's favorite combination................195 Barnes, Blue Harvester smooth sabot along with 60 gr. of N-120 Not great Note, I had done no "cleaning" since I started shooting other than a dry patch between shots............No Rem. clean! 3 shots in 1.3"
Next I went to the 200 Nosler, A 10/60 duplex with 4759/H-322 and started my cleaning regiment but again, 3 in1.3"
Group #3 was a 200 gr. SW blem with a 10/60 duplex with N-110/H-322 and it only did 2.1" for three in a row? This load apparently had a blown sabot on shot #2 and the velocity dropped around 300 fps and there was no sign of it on the target.
For the coming week I plan of working on the action (maybe someone has a suggestion on the tight primer thing?) and will probably put my Burris short magnum 4x14 scope on and see what happens. And then who knows, when I get Tom Posts adjustable die and start working with sabot less, this 1 - 20" twist barrel might come to life? It sure looks like it should shoot ;D
I only fired one group with the Savage/PN after a fouler and it put three in .880" with four making it 1.1 and five 1.4"
No target pictures today as there were a lot of 7.62 x 39 SKS shots on the paper and it looked too confusing ;D
Another thing that I noticed was this Boyd's TH stock is not as comfortable as my Wenig stock on the Savage..........at least shooting from the lead sled. It seems like my finger is a bit far from the trigger. Fortunately with the 2 oz. Shilen trigger, it does not need too much "pullin!". When I shoulder the rifle it is fine
