In a chat with Dan at McGowen I asked if he had any thoughts of resuming the DMB prefits. He said "no" only because of the liability of calling it a prefit and having the customer "filing his breechplug". If I understand him correctly he said he would make barrels for anyone requesting them on with a non-prefit description where no breechplug is installed by McGowen but will cut the Savage breechplug threads to a customer specified depth in relationship the the recoil lug shoulder. This is done under the assumption that it is installed and headspaced by a "professional". For the DMB barrels I originally used a spec of 1.825"-1.830" from recoil lug shoulder to stock Savage breechplug tip. In hindsight after assembling a few guns with the DMB barrel I have revised my spec to 1.835"-1.840" only to increase the possible primer surround by the breechplug primer pocket. Any of these barrels will need to be ordered directly from McGowen as savage-barrels.com wants nothing to do with these anymore. Hopefully this info is what Dan intended in our conversation, but you will need to verify this with him. I know a lot of mistakes were made with breechplug chamber machining and the labeling issue but they now have a reamer that cuts the entire pocket except for the threads and no labeling will be done. As far as wait times I can't say.

Still pondering, but this is much better news than no more barrels.

How much would a barrel for a Savage be with them fitting the breech plug and barrel to your reciever? Price for a 45cal and 50cal plus barrel drop for sizeing plus shipping? That would help people deside what they would go for.

All the DMB fuss has been for 700 ml barrels. For a Savage? They should sell a prefit because it uses a barrel nut and requires no breechplug modifications to set headspacing. A shipped non-fluted barrel should be $300 or a little less.

For the 1.835"-1.840 that you suggest, does it matter if you're using a stock 700ML recoil lug or a "custom" replacement?

The .186 repacement lug is the same thickness as a stock one, so the spec stays the same. It's just much easier to bed the tapered side lug than the straight sided and notched original. You can use the original if you want. McGowen was or is stocking the same lug that Midway sells as a "Callahan" which is made by Pacific Tool and Guage as well as Savage breechplugs so you can get everything from them instead of paying shipping from two other sources. They were also planning on stocking some lugs in chrome-moly to blue for blued barrels sold since Midway only sold one "in the white" (chrome-moly un-blued). You'll have to check with them on what they do have.
