SMI has my H&R action now building me a .45 caliber SML barrel and I've read where they have two differant kinds of breechplugs. I understand they have one with a ventliner and a carbine type. Which is is best one and why? Thanks Kid...

I have both types, but now I only use the vent liners, I like the idea if you have a problem a long way from home, all have to do is screw in a new liner I have one that Pete {very nice work} made for me over two years ago, never had in in my rifle.

Also the first carbide plugs Rick, got ended up coming from China, I burned them out fast. I like the vent hole to be .027 or .028, the smallest carbide I had was .032, thats not to say they don't come smaller Get both and see which you like.
Good Luck

Not sure if there is any advantage to either, more of a convenience maybe.
Vents are easily replaced when worn out. Their disadvantage- the ever changing flash opening and monitoring of it.
If they are using carbide bushings and not hardened, the life should be very long. I have burned through cheap hardened bushings in less than a 100 shots. Long lasting bushings are nice because you can remove a variable from a load for many shots. Check it, clean the flash channel and be done with maintenance. A disadvantage is bushing replacement and cost.
I can't recommend a bushing plug that only has a pressed fit. Some stay put, others get blown out the barrel. IMO a secondary safety device is needed to insure the bushing does not move. I would advise anyone using a bushing plug to make sure they have a witness mark and pay attention to it when reloading.

only tried a bushing plug once, after a few shots my 209's were blowed up. took plug out and the bushing was gone, so all screw-vents for me now..

I have both types but prefer the vent types. It is easy to replace the vents but when the bushing is shot there is alot more down time involved.
