My son wants to try Horn. 4500's this year for deer. He will try RL-7 and H4198 for powder with BCR sabots. I see posts about the Rem's and of course the BO's, but wanted to know about performance of the Hornady's on deer ? Any help appreciated, thanks!

A friend shoots them in his 50 cal. He shoots 67g of H4198 with the BCR. Velocity is around 2350 fps. Good performance on the few deer he's shot with them. Pass throughs on boiler room shots and consistent 1.5 to 2.0 MOA load out to 200 yds. His gun shoots the BO better but he doesn't want to spend the money on BO's. I'm still working on him ;D This bullet used to shoot right with the BO in my old 50 cal out to about 150 yds. Beyond that the BO shined.

Thanks Chris,
We hunt primarily in strip mine So. Illinois area so 150 yds for us is probly close to longest shot taken. ;D We'll have a few range sessions to see if we can dial it in--when this dang heat breaks.

bird,
No I haven't, don't know much about the 325 ftx? It would be a good deal for a guy to get a "sampler platter" of say 10-20 bullets from Horn./Barnes etc. to take to range and see what your gun likes.

I've only shot one deer with them. Hard quartering away shot at about 110 yards. Started in behind the ribs and lodged in the skin under the off shoulder. If I recall correctly, it weighed 273 grains. I would have preferred complete penetration, but it's not like that deer was going anywhere.

lwh,
I would have thought that bullet would have passed thru? Obviously deer didn't care! ;D I guess angling thru the body & hitting the shoulder slowed it down. Sound like good weight retention.

About the only bullets that would give you a pass through with that kind of shot would be a Barnes all copper or the BO.

Myself, Dad, and Brother all shoot them in our Savages with 44 grs of AA 5744 and they perform great on whitetails. We have killed 15 to 20 deer and not considering changing to anything else.
