I was thinking about trying the 300 gr. sst in my fifty cal. smokeless and was wondering how they perform on game ? How would you rate them against other bullets?

My cousin shoots 300SST with 68g of H4198 in his 50 cal. Speed is just over 2300 fps and accuracy it good. Performance on deer has been decent with most shots in the boiler room and 200yds and under. Pass throughs with good size exit wounds are the norm for his load and shot placement. Any 300g bullet that is commonly shot out of the 50 cal Savage is gonna be more that adequate on deer size game.

Years ago I tried the 250 gr SST's with poor results--lost an 8ptr only to find it the following day while lookin for another deer. No exit wound made trailing impossible in thick brush. Never have tried the 300 gr's, but would think they'd have more punch to em. I'm kinda curious about the 325 Hornady's performance--that oughta leave a blood trail!! ;D

Sofar from what ive seen and the few ive personally shot at paper..... I would have to agree. ;D
Actually i just resized a few so they fit a few more sabots better. I will be shooting them if this heat wave ever ends.

If the 250 SST shot good for you, there's an easy solution if you want to stay with that bullet. Just switch to the 250 gr. Bonded Shockwave and use a sabot that gives it a good snug fit if using smokeless powder. The Bonded Shockwave will take a lot more abuse compared to the regular Shockwave/SST's.

They came out to .4545-.455 is the best i could measure. They are running on the larger side near the ogive. Near the base was a consistent .4545 They were really tight in my Harvester 54x45 sabots and now they load fine too.

You will not be disappointed with the 325 gr FTX. No need to mess with the size either....just use the right sabot, Harvestor crush rib.
Regarding the 300 SST.....Several dozen deer killed at our camp in the past several years...2 guys still use them exclusively. Almost always 2 holes, they shoot good enough to hunt.
As Chris said, any bullet of 300 gr or more is probably going to fine. I am a little sqeamish when pushing 300 XTP, Rem 300's and similar bullets at 2500 fps (which I have done) but the deer I killed close up all died quick with a range of structural hits to the vitals. One buck was shot on the dead run at 50+/- yds and hit far back with the 300 XTP. It literally cut the spine and vertebrea's in half and left several dozen slivers of copper in the "blast" zone. The hit was good enough to also do damage to the back/top of both lungs and this deer was dead when he hit the ground.
One of the most dramatic results I've seen on a deer was from a buck 2 years ago I shot with the 300 rem. Boiler room shot at 150 yds. MV2500 fps. Large entrance hole and baseball size exit. This buck acted unhit and disappeared after two bounds over a knoll in the field. I reached the impact zone and just said "oh my"...there was so much blood and lung material on the ground. 10 yds on the track and there he was just over the hill. About eye level on a berry bush was a 4 inch piece of lung dangling that I figured he cough up because there was pieces of lung in his mouth!

Wilms, I have had great luck with the 300 Rem as well, taking maybe 6-8 deer with different powders and muzzle velocities betw 2100 to 2300 fps. Distance on these deer was no more than 120 yds. None of these deer went more than 30 yds after being hit & ALL shots were pass thru's with blood trails which is what it should do. Many guys use it on this board. Mark

There may not be a need for everyone to resize them but if your bore is tight like both of mine, its a huge help and now i can use a larger variety of sabots with 458s. Several 458s are cheaper than the 300gr SST so im happy so far.
Before i sized them i had to use a MMP Orange and now a BCR loads the way i like it. I only offered it as an option since loading one in a BCR was nearly impossible in both of mine. I have an excellent range rod and i couldn't imagine loading it with my standard XS rod in the field.
I get them cheap enough that a $18 die still didn't offset my price on them enough to make a difference in total cost.
