I've read on this forum about many of you that love the BO. Randy Wakeman claims to be getting incredible 300 yard groups and loves this bullet on deer. I'm wondering why it's such a good flyer? I know it has a good BC. But so do some other bullets. Any suggestions?

I don't know that Randy ever made that claim. I do know he ran an article about some 300 yard shooting I had done with it. To answer the question why it shoots so well, I can offer my opinion. First the Savage 10mlII has the same rate of twist as most 45-70 barrels. This bullet is a premium bullet for a 45-70 so it is stabilized well by the twist of the Savage. It also is a .458 bullet and with the right sabot it is a good match to the bore size of most 10mlII's. It is a lead core bullet with a jacket that obturate s well in a smokeless muzzle-loader. Put all 3 of these together and it works very well. Of course there are other bullets that shoot well to 300 yards in the 50 cal Savage, but this bullet also offers very good penetration and expansion which some folks prefer. The BO also has a proven track record on game, several years ago we ran a thread on here tracking deer killed with this bullet and if I recall there were well over 100 reported and only one or two did not get full pass through regardless of shot angle, deer size or distance.

I think you'll find that most any .458 bullet fly's just as good. With the Barnes, there is no doubt about 2 holes in a deer
With the Rems, Hornady's and other lighter jackets bullets, you'll get the accuracy and have to determine if the terminal performance is what you want because they will shed more weight....no doubt killing deer at just about any angle....but maybe blasting a lot of meat. The 325 FTX seems like a good compromise in both areas.
In any event, The BO is expensive to shoot in quantity. But when it's game time, I would say it is hard to beat from the 100's of testimonials here. I have a feeling that the 325 FTX will eventually "dig in" and soon be talked about at the same level in both accuracy and performance. I can personally vouch for this bullet on deer being pushed fast.

Has anybody done extensive shooting at 300 yds with the other .458 bullets?
