Is there an equivalent to the Callahan .186 stainless lug, or is there somewhere else it can be ordered? Midway is backordered until mid August. Brownells didnt seem to have anything close and google turned up nothing. Thanks

#1.. Callahan parts are made by Pacific Tool & Gauge. Only the names are changed to protect the innocent.
#2.. The PT&G part number IIRC is 156560 but I would double check with them.

the MAN has spoken, as you will find Ken knows everything (no kidding) I looked myself when getting ready for the build but they seem to be about it in a .186

If you go with a Mcgowen barrel they have been stocking the lugs too. Or they may just sell you one anyway if they still have some. You can probably get a Savage breechplug from them too to save shipping from multiple sources.

Holy crap, he even got the part number right. He IS the MAN, thanks! I'll call them Monday, hopefully they have them in stock.

They quoted me a price with me supplying my own BP, but I guess I didnt ask them if they stocked them also. Might be worth a call to them before, as I was going to order both Monday morning. Thanks.

McGowen was even supposed to get some chrome-moly lugs to blue for those wanting a blued lug. You'll have to ask Dan what they have.

Try Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply 763 682-4296. He sells a real nice machined lug.

Try Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply 763 682-4296. He sells a real nice machined lug. He has parts for both Savage and Remington. However, if you get a recoil lug from him for a Remington, you may need to do what this guy did (which would be great for a switch barrel operation with the added barrel nut, or if you ever change the barrel for any other reason), or grind off the lug keeper: savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,42821.0.html

Everybody has a over-sized (thicker) lug but when it comes to one that is stock thickness (3/16" or .185") it gets slim pickings. With the Savage no big whoop, the barrel nut makes up for it. If you want to use a thicker lug on a 700ML using the Hunter kit and the Savage breechplug you could face the front of the action to keep the front of the breechplug (chamber) in the thicker part of the barrel. When this was started getting the front of the breechplug past the recoil lug was a attempt to add even greater strength to the modification. Instead of the less then 1" minor thread diameter on the Remington the chamber is fully in a area that is 1.200" in diameter.

Thanks for all the responses, looks like I have several options other than twiddling my thumbs for 3 weeks waiting on Midway. And thanks Ken for the explaination, makes it easy for a newb to understand why it matters.

Rossman.............would it not be easier to just move the shoulder on the barrel back to make up for the thicker lug? I think I would rather cut the shoulder than the action? Richard

If you move the shoulder back on the barrel your cutting right over the chamber. With the Savage breechplug and then having Hunter bump the length on his original bolt nose it comes real close with the .185 lug. Like I said earlier this was an attempt to get more strength into the modification and Dave D. did well. It would be nice to get another .125 or more on the bolt so we could go with a .200 or .250" lug. The barrels major thread diameter is close to the Savage but since the Remington uses a coarser thread pitch it has a minor diameter slightly less then the Savage. You could cut the shoulder and come out with strength equal to the 10ML-II but with the Remington set-up with the front of the breechplug in the 1.200 area and the contours Fishhawk came up with it is actually much stronger.
With the Savage 10ML-II the bolt goes farther in and the chamber is past the barrel threads.

OK? But can't see .065" off the shoulder changing much as far as strength? You still have the outside of the action and the recoil lug fitting pretty tight around the barrel which has to increase it's strength? Kind of like one of Remington's "rings of steel" No? Richard
