Jim, just lean that one up against a tree and every buck in the woods will be love sick when they see it. you will have to carry a spare to use on the crowd.....

Jim looks great. I envy you I can barely afford to just build something as cheaply and functional as I can. Jon

Very nice looking rifle. The stock looks like Tiger Tail or wavey grain Maple. If that is correct, what stain did you use to get it that color? Just wondering because I have a maple stock on one of my rifles and I'm thinking of refinishing and that looks like a great color. Thanks, DH

DH: It is supposed to be the walnut that Richard's Microfit sells but in a higher grade. This is the first time I never used any stain. That is the natural color that came out when I used older Homer Formby's tung oil in gloss on it. I put on about 12 coats with a lint free cloth but that did not seal up the pores as a poly coat would so that is being addressed. From the drilling I did I am sure it is walnut. I did get a maple stock from them once in the past however.

A couple of members pm'ed me with some good ideas on filling the pores in the wood. Actually just before I received those I had already been to an auto paint shop and they felt they could spray it to eliminate that. I appreciate the suggestions, always helpful to get ideas from other's experience. I had put on about 12 coats of Homer Formby's gloss tung oil. It may have eventually filled it but it would have taken awhile. On this stick of wood I did not use any stain, that is just the color it ended up being although the tung oil may have added some color. The stock was a second and I did all the prep work and glass bedding so that helped. I enjoy doing that myself but would not want to try to make a living out of it. It can take some time.
