On the back of this months American Hunter (NRA magazine) I see Hornady has come out with a new bullet. It says it's combined technology between GMX and FTX. It's only out in 45/70 right now, but a 250 grain solid bullet (like Barnes) in bulk would be nice to experiment with I would think? How long does it normally take companies to go from selling as packaged (loaded) ammo to bulk bullets for us reloaders? Has anyone tried this in a 45/70? Thanks guys, Jeff

The main thing with Hornady is dealing with Steve Hornady. Supposedly Bill Alexander wanted the .50 FTX bullet for loading in the .50 Beowulf and Steve said no but offered to make the ammo at a ridiculous price. It took 7 years to be able to buy the 250 and 300gr SSTs bulk and you still can't get the 200gr .40s. With the 250gr .452 and the 325gr .458 FTXs it took a couple of years. The .458 GMX was actually announced last year or maybe the fall of 2009 and I still haven't seen the ammo at my friends house yet and he usually jumps on anything 45-70.

I guess Alexander got a little bent over that. Currently they offer 2 Speer loads, atleast 1-3 Lehighs, 1 XTP, 2 Rainier and a Hawks in the 50 Beowulf ammo. I guess he is no longer interested in the 50 FTX. www.alexanderarms.com/catalog/8/ammunition.htm

I e-mailed Hornady a few weeks ago about these bullets. The reply was that bulk bullets were scheduled to be made available in September. I really want to try these bullets when they come out. Since they are Hornadys I am thinking they will be reasonable on price.

On the ad is saw in NAW it appeared to have a boat tail or some tapering in the base area, Is that going to be sabot friendly??? I hope it is shootable ...!!!

The pics ive seen show a radius but not a BT. I would guess since its closer to bore size, what appears to be a larger radius "might" be somewhat SML friendly.

The only problem I see is the gilding metal. Just the addition of 5% zinc makes it harder then fully hardened 110 copper. After seeing the problems the the recent bullet experiment they may be too hard to get obturation for a ML. Plus being technically a brass you will not see them in pistol calibers.

Looking again.. the last 1/4 " or so at the base end slightly tapers to a flat base with a small radius. The bearing surface does not go all the way to the base is all i'm saying. The photo I'm looking at is of a mushroomed bullet. It will be interesting to see how it acts in a sabot and without. The add also mentioned it was available "as a component bullet for reloaders" , I guess when "they" decide its available it will be. The 45/70 bullet is not on the hornady site as of now.

In speaking with Steve Hornady a little over a year ago when the NRA Convention was in Charlotte, this is what he told be about bulk bullets............particularly the 200 gr. .40 SST. Since he sell/produces no center fire round that uses the .40 SST, he will not offer it as a reloading component in bulk. He sells it packaged along with sabots that indicate it is for muzzle loader use only. This way, if someone was to load one of these bullets in say.........a .40 handgun and had a problem? He can testify that the bullets were not meant for CF loading. So, until such time as his company produces .40 loaded ammo with that bullet? You will not see it sold in bulk. Richard
