Hi All, I just received a couple new breech plugs for my Savage ML 1 (not ML II) Savage has indicated these need to be "fit" and headspaced by my gunsmith. When "dry" installing these the bolt resistance with the module in seems a little greater than the original. My gunsmith says this is good and does not think anything needs to be done. Has anyone ever needed any other work done to their new breech plug or is this the norm....just want to make sure we are not missing something before I go "live"
As always your input is greatly appreciated

I agree with your 'smith. The modules sometimes have leakage around the front, and a tighter seal would help.
I had mine replaced, but it was a siezed BP and I have no idea what it took to get it out and replaced.

Im surprise Savage sold you a breechplug. In the past you couldnt get one unless you were a dealer or sent the gun back to the factory. Mike

+1 on What Mike said I also was told that SAVaGE would have to FIT the breechplug. Are you able to just screw it in with no modification to your original setup? I want a backup for my ml1 but I don't want to send it off if I don't need to. Greenhorn

I had to sign a waiver releasing Savage from all liability before they would sell me the breech plugs.I also indicated I would have a competent gunsmith install and headspace the plugs. My Smith indicated both plugs fit and headspaced correctly but this seemed a bit odd as Savage indicated it was a specialized process which would require fitting. I am just checking to see if my Smith missed something or if others have had the same experience as above

My 700ML was the first one my gunsmith ever saw or worked on and he's been doing it for probably 40+ years. Not many gunsmiths IMO are familiar around muzzleloaders, except the ones on here. ;D

IMO the main issue would be if the plug is seating with the barrel correctly so there is no blowby. It seems to good to be true that you could just screw it in and it be right, after savage has made a big deal over the fitting of a new ml1 plug. Maybe some veterans here can give you some more insight. I'm going to look at mine and see what the possibilities could be.

Tucker. I wish I was as wise as you I've paid major money to get a few breach plugs for my ml1's. I'm a nut for the ml1. I will try Savage again so I can get a couple more spares. Thank you for the info. I have at least 20 modules that I acquired over the years I recently picked up a supposedly never fired ml1 I put one of my modules in it and there was no feeling at all when I closed the bolt Jon

Jon try other modules there are some inconsistenties. Some are crush fit some are not at least with the ten modules I have. I put one in one day and thought something was wrong with my bolt, but it was just a tighter fitting module which is what you want to minimize blowby. As mentioned you might have to shim the boltface for the tight fit .

Tucker I just took mine out and put it back in , when the plug "SEATS" you can feel it . I would compare the feel of your original one to your new one. Hope that helps I needed to play with her anyway its been too long.

Greenhorn. I was just talking about one instance the Modules are easy enough to measure and then match. I still feel the original is the best Savage ml built but everything factory bult has tolerances so you have to check. Jon

Breach plug "seats" same as original when screwed in. Headspace seems a little tighter than original as bolt is slightly harder to close when module is inserted. All seems well but I want to be sure nothing was missed before I fire the rifle. I agree the ml1 is a great rifle...gives you that "added" insurance over the ml2 and accuracy is wonderful

Sounds like your good to go . Did you get extra liners, they sent me a package of ml2 liners. So I had to reorder, they straightened it so alls good. I am in search of someone who would counter sink the face of my plug as to allow me to use the ml2 liner ,you might want to have that done to yours as well. If your that worried about it stick a primer in it and shoot it and see what happens. Good luck...!!!

Took the rifle out today to test. Nothing short of spectacular Sub moa groups, no blow-by at the module So much for a complex installation process...

On a serious note YOU did question and investigate to the best of your knowledge and a gunsmith also for safety sake before going live and safe is better than sorry.Good Job and thanks for the info, when I get my plugs for my gunsmith we'll make sure its right also Those ml1's are the bomb aren't they,I love mine it will shoot sub moa as well . I'm going to see if I have the same succes as you??? Just for a spare that I'll never need!!! I have more liners than the law allows already.

I got my spare breechplug from Bill Ball, Henry Ball's son. I bought the breechplug and two spare modules and Bill said it was the last one they had. Henry chamfeed the plug for the ventliner so the plug would use the ML II liners. Ive got over a thousand shots on the plug that came with the gun and its still going strong. Unless something bad happens I doubt I will ever have to install the new plug. I have 23 modules and 25 ventliners for the ML I and plan never to run out. Mike
