I sent my H&R action off to SMI today for a .45 caliber barrel 24 inch in length and 1 in 22 twist. This will be my first smokeless muzzle loader and I'm looking forward to it. I want to say thanks to everyone here that helped me make my decision( money also played a role in the decision) and all of the advice that was given.
I would like anyone to chime in with their experence with such a ML barrel from SMI. Looking forward to some postive responses. A few pics of guns and groups shot with similar ML build would be great encouragment.
If anyone has any really good tips for making the trigger ALOT better please let me know. Are there any aftermarket trigger parts or replacements for the H&R. Again Thanks Kid... ;D

I've got the same barrel [SMI] with the same twist as yours on a H&R Handi Rifle frame. I worked over my trigger using a tutorial I found on Graybeards Handi Rifle forum. I also put a Wolff hammer spring on it. It makes for a nice hunting rifle, hammered two mulies with it last season. Both around 200yds, 62gns H4198, 200gn SST, 2700fps, DRT. It weighs a little less than my Savage Pac-Nor conversion. It seems to shoot anything my Savage shoots.....So far 58-62gns N120, 58-62gns H4198, 58-62gns RL7 with either the 200SST or the 195 Barnes. I would bet that your going to be happy, most all are. Zen

Update: SMI received my action on 07-11-11. I hope it doesn't take too long to get it back cause I've been playing the wait game for months now with a suppressor I got on order along with a rimfire pistol. Dang I hate long waiting periods. Kid...

Mine's a .50 1:22 on an ultra slughunter frame. 100yds with 250gr xtp on top of 42gr of N110 in an RCR with a fed 209A primer- 5 shots I'm now shooting the 250gr .50 thors from it with great results. The douglas barrels are right on spec and smooth as glass, and SMI does great work. I predict you will be very happy

Rangeball ,why in the world would you want more than that ? Just trying to do my part to stimulate the economy It will shoot the thors almost as tight, and I'm just sold on the terminal reliability of the barnes bullets.

You've got the same scope that I have on mine.. I personally believe it's the best scope out there for under $200... Try 60gns 4198 with those Barnes when it cools down a little. I think you'll like it. E-mail me at zenvoor@embarqmail.com with your pictures and I'll post it for you. Zen

Gunny, The cost is $375.00 total. $360.00 for the barrel and their work and $15.00 for return shipping. I hope to get it back within a couple months so I can get it sighted in for deer season. As for the decision of getting one of their Douglas barrels or have your 45-70 done up was the same decision I had to make cause I had just purchased a new H&R ultra SS 45-70 with 24" barrel. I decided to go with the douglas barrel becase of all the imput from fellow members here on how well they shoot and the quality of them plus I took a gamble that my state would do away with muzzleloading season and go to what is known as primitive hunting season where you can use a single shot hammered operated firearm that is .44 caliber or above. No luck this year so I sent my single shot 12ga action to SMI for the .45 caliber hook up. Why the shot gun action instead of the 45-70 well if I'm going to be swapping barrels around I would rather do the shot gun instead of a scoped barrel that sighted in and ready to hunt. As for having SMI redo your 45-70 barrel into a muzzleloading set up price is $110.00 plus $15.00 shipping. Good Luck which ever way you go. Kid...

I did,nt realize that he and a friend were doing the smokeless muzzleloading before Ball even thought about it. Im looking forward to your build and future results. gunny
