45/70 ss NEF is in my possession.I'm having second thoughts. If, I knew I could get another SS barrel for it.Then I would proceed with the conversion to 45 smokeless. The problem is my ffl gave me a hand loaded round cast 485 gr bullet going around 1200 ft per,and i liked it!! Recoil very mild. Now I want both ;D I'm going to call H&R and find out if I can get another 45/70 in SS and a 24" barrel. Gunny

This link may help you out however they do not list a stainless 45/70 barrel. They are pretty quick with turn around time fitting the new barrel to your frame, atleast they were when I sent mine in for a .308 barrel a few years back. www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.asp

Gunny, you can call SMI or go to www.smokelessmuzzleloading.com They can sell you a stainless douglas barrel already converted for the NEF and you can keep your stock barrel. The website doesn't show everything they do, but they have many options.

If you order another barrel make sure to request a trigger job too!

I did a trigger job on mine when I converted....Honed and polished everything I could.. Changed out the hammer spring with a Wolf.... There was some improvement , 5# to 3 1/2#. It's still a far cry from the Rifle Basix trigger that I put on my Savage .45. I believe the SMI barrel [Douglas] conversion is as good as the Pac-Nor in quality and accuracy potential. The advantage in accuray that my Savage Pac-Nor has over my Handi Rifle SMI is all in the trigger... If I had a 45-70 barrel that shot well I'd get another barrel made to shoot as a muzzleloader. Zen

That is one reason I never dropped a cartridge in the tube. I say, "just do it"!
