Ive been watching and have been seduced by you all shooting 45 Pacnors . The problem is funding but i justified it in my mind to go the economical route . I am the winning bidder on a NEF SS Laminate Thumbhole 45/70 Ultra Hunter from Gun Broker. I have read i believe all of Slufoots posts on his conversions. Provide a SAVAGE breech plug and Slufoot did the rest. I called Richard today and told him what i bought, his first question was how was the primer held on Slufoots conversion . I don,t know!! Can anybody tell me how Slufoot sets his up. I PM.ed Slufoot but no answer yet ,looks like he has,nt posted in awhile. Thanks Don

Actually I told Gunny it must be some type of set up similar to the plug on 700 CF conversion...............where the plug accepts a cartridge case for priming? Don't know, never actually saw one? Maybe he modifies a Savage plug??? Richard

I would think that you just put it in the plug and close the action. I believe all his conversions ,he bored and tapped the barrel to accept a savage bp,then headspaced the action on the type of gun you won. From what I have read and remember thats essentially what he does, at least thats all hes saying hes doing to his conversions who knows. I hope I answered your question. Just a reply, Greenhorn I just saw a 450 marlin nef on gunbroker whats the difference bore size compared to a 45/70 anyone

My guess is he deepens the primer pocket a bit and threads the Savage plug to head space the primer against the frame. Similar to any break action sub gun with a threaded plug. He did a Laminate/SS NEF for Busta that was just beautiful.

I usually used my fingers. But some guns do need a little 209 primer tool occasionally. I never really had any problems removing a primer from a break action. Thats why im guessing the Savage plug primer pocket gets a little work too. Likely to head space more on the the length of the primer than the sides. At least that how most break action plugs seal.

My pre smokeless life was with a cva optima break action and thats where I learned where the primer went. There was a guy on the modern inline board with one recently and he was able to adjust the headspacing on it. Break actions are really the easy actions to access. They can also be just as accurate or better than bolt actions. Congrats and send it on to Slufoot wherever he may be . That 450 marlin sure looks tempting to me those ultra hunters are cool. Some use a SMI style breechplug just like the one they use in their smokeless conversion. PM "Wayles" on this board.... His TC 45/70 conversion is done that way. I'm not sure that a Savage plug would work. There might not be not enough meat in that contour of barrel they use on the 45/70's. Zen

Slufoot did a NEF 45/70 conversion for Busta with a Savage plug. You can see it in Omega45s link. Im not really sure if its ideal for the conversion but he likes it.

That's good to know.... I like the Savage plug a lot better than the SMI plug that I have on my SMI 45 conversion. Zen

Panhandle. I have to agree with you nothing wrong with the SMI plug but it is more work on mine I have a tool to remove the primer which with a break action would not be a problem But mine is a #1 and with a scope it makes it a little more work. Jon

SMI sets up their plugs so the primer is a tight press fit. You can lose fingernails pulling them out. They have a little tack puller like tool to pry them out with.

Since my post got lost in cyberspace, I'll just steal your words. Finger and thumb W209 primer removal so far with light saboted bullets and BH209. The primer pocket is reamed and a headspace bushing is installed. Never had a problem losing a post here, so I didn't copy it before submitting like I do on other sites. I explained it much better in the other post, so if somebody finds it please let me know.

Sorry for the late reply folks, I've been camping/fishing all week and just got home this weekend.
The Savage breechplug that I use on these conversion uses a headspace bushing that is pressed into the plug. I recommend a depriming tool for getting the 209 out, I have one made by Traditions that works great and is inexpensive.
GOOD SHOOTING! Slufoot
