Today: Hot and humid but with good friends at the range (what could be bad?) Today was about improving/tweaking on some stuff from last week. #1 was trying to get that sabot-less thing to work using the base of tan mmp. This week, I added a .060" veggie wad on top of the sabot-base and under the bullet........a 200 gr. FTX
After last weeks fiasco with the powder failing to ignite, I was pleasantly surprised and while the group was nothing to write home about, never the less, as Dennis said: "It was minute of deer!" So after the 100 yard group, I took it out to 300 yards. This time I used a Triplex load that works well with saboted bullets: 10/23/34--110/120/322. While the five shot group was big (due to shot #3), four did land in 2" which I would be happy with any day.
Next up, I tried the same bullet combination at 300 yds. but with a duplex that has been working well with saboted 200 gr. bullets: 10/60---4759/H-322. This however, did not work like I had hoped ! 10 1/2 inches.
On target #4 I tweaked a load that looked promising last week but was a little shy on velocity so I upped the starter charge from 10 to 15 gr. and dropped the main charge by five grains to 65. This perked up the load to the tune of about 130 fps more. While the five shot was the same, the three shot group shrunk to .6"
Another load that lacked velocity last week utilized H-335 BALL powder as the main charge. Here, I did not reduce the main charge but added five grains to the starter. It perked up the velocity about 200 fps to 2679. While not a great group, I thought I would try it at 300 yards with a Barnes 195. Here I was pleasantly surprised. The Barnes velocity was a little higher at 2688 fps with a respectable ES of 26 fps. A three shot group of 1.3" and all five in 3.5". So who says ball powders cannot be used in a ML? IF.....you use them in a duplex with a "stick" powder for the starter AND to block the little balls from getting into the vent liner, then yes, they will work. I have no idea about cold weather problems that might exist but suspect with the 4759, N-110 or 5744 used as starters, they should be OK?
Herman had a nice little "knot" at 300 with the XTP's
