All this about why someone agreed to build a "prefit" barrel, and "taking the reins" is nonsense, Pacnor has done an excellent job building "prefits" for Savage 10ML's, Savage centerfire conversions, Remington 700ML's, and more. If any barrel company can follow a simple blueprint and numerical specifications a prefit barrel for the above guns (and others) is quite easy. As far as fitting and or headspacing most should be able to either do it themselves or easily find someone capable of following easy well documented guidelines. If any questions should arise, myself and several other have always been here to help free of charge, no shipping of actions, or assembly fees. 98 percent of what I know about ML's I learned from reading this board and asking questions, thank you to all that have contributed! The purpose of prefits has always been to cut costs for the do-it-yourselfer. Doing some or all of the work on a gun yourself adds to the pride of owning it. The reason we tried McGowen was to save costs over Pacnor. The headspacing tutorial is done in the way that it was explained by Dave D our Pacnor "DD" barrel designer. I believe completely in the method of reshaping the tip of the breechplug to match the bevel of the boltnose that Hunter provides, it is much better and safer. The statement of "liability" of "filing" the breechplug is a copout in my opinion. This is a Remington ML action intended for blackpowder subs, with an aftermarket smokeless barrel, using a bolt modification made by a great member of this board, in a muzzleloader that who knows how much or what one may stuff in the barrel. and now worry about changing the shape of a breechplug from a company with no other parts involved on the gun ? Sinarms, I'll bet you can do this project for the members that believe a prefit is desirable.

As far as the Remington ML barrels from McGowan it just seems lack of details. Not just with these barrels but even with centerfire barrels they have shipped thru Savagebarrels. It doesn't take much to double check your threads and any other machining operation. It doesn't take much to clean it and do a final QC check before you ship it. Putting your name on it may be a point of pride or cheap advertising but how many other barrel makers do that. Most of the rifle builders I know do it after the rifle is assembled. Having worked with Fishhawk on this some I thought we had a pretty good plan and was communicated well. Maybe this will be a learning experience for McGowen and at least the are making good on the ones already sold.

;D The devil can be in the details they say. Sometimes it all does not come out right for a number of reasons. Teething problems. I hate it that there may be a delay or loss of another barrel provider, everyone here worked hard on acheiving that and another source would be positive and offer more options. Perhaps it still will work out.

I phoned McGowen and Dan said that they still make barrels for Savage Muzzleloaders.
