Guys, I've heard and seen a few complaints about the engraving on McGowen barrels for the ML's. I talked to them and they said that they have been doing this on regular savage barrels for almost 3 years now. They engrave every 120 degrees. They said that the reason that they do this is to ensure that the markings show up. I've sold quite a few Savage barrels and haven't received any complaints about the engraving. Of course I have them engrave them with Savage barrels in one spot on the barrel. Unfortunately there is always a chance that this engraving won't line up exactly as you want it to. They said that because there is a little difference in each Remington that there is no way to index it so that it comes up correctly, and only once. I am going to ask them to "not" engrave the barrels at all. The only ones that they will engrave is if they have your receiver in hand. As they are not typically installing the breech plugs this shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone has any suggestions please email me directly at products@savage-barrels.com
Thanks, Jon

I just e-mailed you Jon after realizing exactly what you just said after having the question PM'ed to me by a board member about engraving orientation.

Here is what you end up with on the bolt side.

If anyone has an issue with the engraving, Dan at McGowen said he would personally send out a call tag to pick the barrel up and get it back and have the engraving removed. If you would like the engraving on the barrel and have the ability to make a mark (even if it is just a sharpie) showing top-dead-center of the barrel or the left side of the barrel just above the stock line they will re-engrave and send it back out to you 2nd Day Air at their cost. We just want everyone to be happy. Email me at products@savage-barrels.com with your name and address of where to pick it up and we'll get this done.
Jon

I felt its an issue worth raising. I can see .270 Cal McGowan Precision Barrels lightly etched between the black engraved .45 McGowan Precision Barrels. I also had a bore full of sand when the barrel arrived on my doorstep. Is that right also? I am glad they are fixing it and standing behind their product.

WHATT??? I know your getting a good deal on those barrels but come on a NEW barrel is a NEW barrel . I can't figure how .270 would be on a .45. Maybe a bull barrel??? On the otherhand ,it is a good deal for them to index their logo, someone shoulda caught that one before it left the building??? Omega I would have to BITCH sorry. Greenhorn Savagebarrels, I know these first few orders have been a hand full from setting up the cnc all the way to lazer engraving. The barrels seem to shoot very well from the few that have gotten them, but for some it has been a pia to get their barrels. You missed out on me buying one because I couldn't wait any longer on how they were going to shoot. I bought a pacnor and am WAITING on it. What I'm trying to say is work the bugs out and get it together and you'll be surprised how much more the phone will ring. Since the last run has begun there most likely is going to be alot more conversion builds in the future.

Don't know what the "sand" was because McGowen doesn't use sand in their cabinet, they use glass beads. Not an excuse though the barrel most likely was a matte finish and someone at their shop most likely forgot to swab the barrel out before it shipped.
Also not sure what the "faint 270 cal mcgowen" is because it could not be a "used" barrel, I would have to see it so that I could pass it on to mcgowen.

I already sent you and Dan an email this morning. I can see where 270 Win (10) McGowen Precision Barrels was previously on there and not taken off. Sand or glass, it was throughout the bore and the breech plug threads was caked with it also. When the call tag gets here the barreled action will be on the way back for clean up.

Ive bought two McGowen barrels and the first one was threaded too long. After I put the barrel on the action there was .100 of threads showing and this was with an after market thick recoil lug. McGowen paid for shipping and made me a new barrel. The second barrel was sent back to have the profile made smaller and for some reason they didn't square the crown off. The end was as sharp as a razor blade so I used a file and took the edge off. They laser etched one barrel and not the other. The one that was etched was hard to read because it lined up with one etching under the scope and the other two almost covered up by the stock. I will say this the accuracy of both barrels was very good and I have no complaints. Mike

Jon thank-you for coming on here and addressing problems. this is just my opinion there should be no engraving because orientation would be impossible for a drop in even on a savage.2 - I would think that before beadblasting they would plug the bore so nothing would get in the bore period. Again jmo

Update: Dan at McGowen is sending me a door tag so I can send my barreled action back to have the black engraving and the faintly clear engraving of 270 Win (10) taken off. I am glad they are standing behind their product.
