These are the first two targets I shot today with the 700 ML Smokeless It was warm when I started at 9:30 and can usually shoot 2 before I put the gun down and start shooting the Savage 93 17 HMR, those are the small holes in both target lower left red dot. All shots are 100 yards Target 1, First shot was to see where I was on paper after laser bore sighting last night. After scope adjustment, shots 2,3,4 were held on the bull, and as you can see they all fit inside one block, needless to say I was happy. Target 1 was with 40cal, 200gr. hp/xtp knurled and 58 gr. of H4198, Fed 209A, Harvester blue smooth Target 2 was at same distance, but bullet was Barnes 195knurled, harvester smooth blue, 58 Gr. N120, Fed 209A. It did not shoot as well as the XTP, this bullet was looser in this barrel than the XTP. I wanted to see what I had, the rifle will be put away now till Oct when temps here in central Fl start to cool off and as I work on my deer load for the fall/winter. I did notice there was more felt recoil with the 4198 load vs the N120 load. The Barnes 195 are the old style and not the new flatter based ones. Mike

If there was any doubts about a McGowen barrel I think you just put them to rest. Great shooting right out of the box.

Great start Mike! Bump that N120 up into the 60-63 grn range and it should tighten things up with the 195...fouling and leaving it dirty may help as well.. if not that will be a real bummer. How much did you knurl the 195 up?

Excellent start and encouraging for the guys that went out on a limb with an alternative barrel company. Thanks to all who had a part in this.

Mike, looks like it will do very well. puts some fears to rest after Hoz posted a few targets and now you got good results also.
Did you pillar and bed your gun? I just got Robs (Hoz) today to pillar and bed for him and he left the rings/ bases on it so guess what Im going to do next weekend? Hopefully I will get to post some groups from his gun and see If I can equal or better his groups.

Great start, Mike. Wish my McGowen shot that well.
Not only do you have a nice clover group with the Barnes 195 target, I think you would be a little surprised if you actually measured the distance between the farthest holes as opposed to the measured distance of the farthest holes the XTP made. I think you will find target #2 group about 1/8" better than that of target #1!!

No pillar or bed. The stock is the remington 700ADl, beavertail. It is really a firm stock especially in the fore end, the barrel is almost free floated it is touching in a couple of spots, I opened up the fore end with a large dowel and sandpaper, I will get back at that next week. I only torqued the action screws to 15 inch/lbs
I will measure the targets this pm and give the distance from holes Sure do love that big Weaver scope
Target 1, 1" group Target 2 1.25" group

Excellent shooting. My McGowan barrel is on the Fed Ex truck for delivery, next business day though. I have alot of 200gr XTP's, SST's and 195gr Barnes to try. Looks like 58gr H4198 is a great place to start. Thanks for sharing.

tar12, I'm curious what obturation you talking about? In my understanding the only thing that gets obturated is the sabot that the bullet is riding in,and unless sabot blows-bullet is not touching rifling at all. Am I right on this or in need of some schooling?

Hillbill,
Tighten up that 1" grouping I had and I will be eaven happier! Run her out to 2 or 3 hundred yards if you would like. Thanks for the work!

Am I right on this or in need of some schooling? Every bullet will expand/obturate into the sabot upon ignition and in turn into the rifling. You are correct in that the bullet does not come into contact with rifling as that would be serious failure There has to be expansion or we would be cleaning out a lot of stripped plastic...try pushing a combo through with out the breech plug in..and then shoot that same combo and compare componets. I did this with XTPs and the results were obvious to me.

I would be very happy with both of those targets Now you say that the Barnes did not shoot as well.....Hmmm. IMO, there are not enough shots to make that determination. Both groups are well under an inch and the Barnes group has an extra shot in it. To be fair take the first target and shoot another XTP and see where it goes. If it does not expand the first group then I might agree with you, but unless you shoot in a tunnel as I do there is always some wind and nerves and barrel heat and barrel fouling that prevents all of our groups from being better...IMO ;D edge.
