Just wondering if you guys think this will work. I recently had shoulder surgery and the gave me this ice machine. It has a rectangular pad the a little cooler circulates ice water threw the pad. It has a battery pump or by hand. Do think there would be any issues with rapping the barrel between shots and letting the pump run?

I think the cooling rod theory is more on taking the heat out of the inside of the barrel. IMO your rig would work it would just take longer than a rod.My 2 cents. Greenhorn

Cooling from the inside out I would imagine is easier than what you are proposing. The cool rod attacks the heat right at the source.........the inside. And what is nice, is you can actually feel the outside of the barrel getting cool. If its cool on the outside, then it has to be cool on the inside Richard

I don't know if you guys remember? Quite some time ago I think it was Harley that came up with what seemed to be the ideal cooling rod it was well designed but at that time people didn't seem interested in the necessity of keeping the barrel cool. Jon

Jasper, I have a similar pump from when my wife had knee surgery, after paying $1400 I wasn't about to throw it away. I thought of making a water jacket for a barrel but then you have to have a different stock. It would be possible to even chill the barrel down below freezing using antifreeze and dry ice. Using the double wall tube like Harley is another possibility.
But once you step back and look at it, the plain jane cooling rod and some ice is a much simpler operation that meets the need. I'm sure some rocket scientist can figure out how many BTUs we are dealing with but it isn't so great where a super heavy duty cooling system is required.

I think I'm going to make a cooler suit for ME I'm the one sweating here. For my barrel a rod is the KISS method ,one less mechanical thing that WILL break .

Guys, I got my cooling rod made. Took a 3 foot length of solid 1/2 inch copper, cut it in half, faced off in the lathe & drilled and tapped a 1/4 20 to join them together with a set screw. Emeryed it down to .496 & finished up with 600 paper. Fits nicely in a cooler & slides down nice 'n easy. I'm gonna give it a workout tomorrow. It's supposed to be 99. SP

Are you getting ready for an african hunt? 99 degrees is toooo hot for me to get out of the house and I landscape for a living.

Smokepoler. Cutting it in half would make it a lot easier to transport. Since I use a small igloo that only covers part of the rod I wonder if there is any problem in the transfer of cooling from one half to the other? Jon

Most of your heat is in the first 12 inches of barrel ( from the breech ) so I bet if you wanted to save money you could make a 1 foot rod and the rest handle...
