I spoke with SMI today concerning a .45 barrel I wanted and they didn't have any or making any soon. Smi was suggesting a 1 in 28 twist but I read here most everyone is using a 1 in 22. I hope this thread doesn't conflict with my first one just wanted to start new one since the other had been read alot already. Thanks Kid...

We've all had great luck with the 1in22 twist. Slower will likely shoot the current saboted .40 bullets OK. We are trying to find or have made a .40 bullet with a higher BC than the current offerings. That bullet will likely require a faster twist. Also if you would want to try the 325 Parker BE sabotless, I'm guessing that will require faster than 1in28.

I would go at least 1:22 (what I have). Honestly I wish I'd gone 1:16...just in case.

I agree with the others, with the work on a heavier .40 bullet a faster twist of at least 1:22 might be the ticket just to keep your options open. Plus the 1:22 has a pretty much proven track record with shooting everything boringly accurate. Shooter can almost hit coins at 200yds at will with his Pacnor/Savage.

It has been proven and proven and proven for us by many great folks here at dougs, Rusty

I have a 1:14 45cal. That I feel shoots as well as my 1:22. Just my 2cents. Jon

There is little to no disadvantage to fast twist barrels vs slower twist; however, there are tremendous advantages to the faster twist. Faster twist allows the stabilization of longer bullets and causes loads to be less velocity sensitive( a wider range of loads shoot accurately). Sabot problems, which were feared or expected, just haven't materialized. Saboted loads of >3,000'/sec shoot well out of 22 twist barrels. I agree with spaniel about the 16 twist vs 22 twist. My next 40 will be a 13.

:)here's my 2cents fwiw most .45 shooters on this board have a 22 twist which works extremely well with the bullets we are shooting now. Heck you can even stabilize the highest bc bullet available the 325 parker. The 40 caliber bullet being designed right now is being designed around the 22 twist so if I was building a rifle it would be 22 twist. And this is coming from a guy that has shot twists from 30 down to 14. There is not going to be a market for a very very small group of people that have a faster twist.jmo

I've got a penny to contribute My next 45 will be a 10 twist, however there is no one else clamoring to shoot a 300 grain 338 bullet either ;D IMO, use the slowest twist that will stabilize your bullets in ALL conditions. I have had problems with bullets that shot fine down into the 30's that would not shoot in the low 20's. If you are happy with the 325 Parker and feel that it is as good as it gets then from Spring to Fall you should be fine with the 1:22 twist. It PROBABLY is OK too during the Winter but it has not been tested there to my knowledge. If you want to shoot cheap bullets like the SST or XTP then absolutely go with a twist no faster than the 22 because they just plain work! The issues come with the What IF scenario. What If someone makes a rigid sabot; What If someone comes up with a high BC bullet; What If, What If!!!!! Heck, my first computer was a TRS-80 with 16K of memory...and that was EXTENDED memory since the bare bones came with 4K ( storage was on a casstte tape recorder since there no disk drives for PC's yet....OH that's right IBM was not in the market yet! What If someone came out with 32 or 64K or a megabyte, or a gigabyte....and now terabyte drives are cheap..... IMO buy what you think you will use most of the time and keep saving your pennies for the day that better mousetrap comes out. edge.
