28XXX is about 2008 production. I think the 2010 production was like from 34XXX to 38XXX with the 4.40" action screw spacing, jeweled bolt and large shank barrel. 395XX sounds about right for the last run.

The new SS/Laminate i got last fall was 394xx IIRC. It was supposed to be one of the last SS ones made.
So that means i should have the 4.40 spacing? It has a jeweled bolt. Anything else different that would effect a 45cal conversion?

gmb, if it has the smooth barrel nut it has the 4.40 spacing and large shank barrel. If thats the case it takes a smooth nut wrench and large shank barrel to convert..no biggie

Oops 381XX, i just checked but it is not a smooth barrel nut. It has the notches for the wrench.
So does effect anything in ordering a 45 barrel from Pacnor or McGowen? I also passed on a stock at the last show because it was a 4.40 and i thought mine was shorter but i guess i may have been wrong.

If you order from Pacnor tell Penny it is large shank if it is in fact a smooth nut with pin hole. they do either

I guess I just got lucky on my barrel. I didn't know there was a difference. I bought one from a member on here without specifying anything.

The Cabelas model all had the smooth nut and I have seen both smooth and grooved nuts on the 2010 production run. There are actually 2 different styles of smooth nuts, one has a single hole and the other is totally smooth. The one with the single hole is the rare one. Fred at SSS has a wrench that will work on both of the smooth nuts. I havn't changed a smooth nut on a 10ML yet but on the centerfires I have done I switched back to a grooved nut on one and the other the owner wouldn't spend the $13. At the factory they polish/ finish after the nut is put on. Doing one afterwards with the SSS wrench, too loose you slip and really mess up the finish. Too tight and your squezzing the threads and still mess up the finish then during reassembly can't tell how much torque.

Mine is 38xxx I did buy mine off of Randy wakeman last fall just prior to Illinois first deer season it has a grooved barrel nut.I am very happy with it overall but all I could afford was the Tupperware stock I'm shopping now for a good replacement.Anyway this serial number info is good to know I had to go check the safe. Thanks Dave
