Happened to see some .50 cal gas checks on sale in a flier and it got me to wondering if anybody ever tried mating these to the bottom of a sabot?

Dave D tried putting some gas checks on sabots when we were trying to get the 40 cal 200 gr SST to shoot in the 50 cal guns. It was very hard and laborious and I never could get the hang of it with Daves help. Did not shoot so great either in that combo for me anyways.

This is not in direct response to your question. Swinglock did suggest a gas check put in backwards behind nonsabotted bullets instead of various paper or veggie wads. I have not tried that yet but the principle might be similar.

I originally used a 45 gas check that I modified to fit my 50 Savage when I was shooting Lil"Gun. They were installed upside down and mated with the sabot taper. I probably shot a couple of thousand shots that way before I re-barreled and went to the PVC sabots. My first 45 PVC sabots all had a gas check: edge.

Edge you should let Jeff try your sabots and bullets he might get a group out to 600yds. They look wicked just sitting there and I bet they shoot as good as they look. What bullet do you use in them?

Edge you should let Jeff try your sabots and bullets he might get a group out to 600yds. They look wicked just sitting there and I bet they shoot as good as they look. What bullet do you use in them? I'm sure they are gone now, and PVC sabots are corrosive so you need to clean the bore and oil it after EVERY shooting session! They were 308 caliber SST's from my 14 twist ML. They did go almost end to end on a whitetail but the bullet was fully expended which was why I switched to the Accubond! From the Old Board: dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thread=4119&page=1PS the post says they were 8mm, but that was when I used in my 50 caliber ML and this was my 45 so 0.308 is correct. I did switch to the Accubond and two weeks later I shot the longest range deer of my life so far: dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Savage&action=display&thread=4240edge.
