Thats looks great Dave. Might as well make use of the space if you ever plan on hunting with it. Even the old rear lug 788 with the small box mag might have some possibilities as a SML. 9 rear lugs and only a 60 degree lift to cycle the bolt. They had some issues as a centerfire and used to sell cheap when they got sloppy but as a ML those issues shouldn't matter. I like the lugs just for the added strength but i prefer them in the rear on a ML. Ive got a Rem600 but i cant bring myself to butcher it after all the time i spent turning it into a Cooper scout rifle clone.

GMB54120, I had a few 788's. A .222; 22/250; 6mm and a .243. Paid $69.95 ea and sold them for 150 ea and thought I made money. That's on my list of some of the most stupid acts performed by me. I remember at the local dynamite shoot you could win a 15# turkey if you set off the dynamite at 100yds offhand. $2 per shot or 3 shots for $5. I set off 3 with the .222 and they wouldn't give me 3 turkeys only 2 and said there was a sign there somewhere, they just forgot to put it up. They were tackdrivers and a rugged design. I sure miss them all. Tough to find one at a gunshow for under $400 that isn't severely abused.

:)Scott I was going to build one awhile back but other projects got In the way. Tony on this board built one in a .50. I'm pretty sure he sold it but it should make a nice sml.

mountainam I had one also in 308 and even though it was a low end gun, i liked it better than a 700 in some ways. The rear lugs were known to get sloppy with extended use in some calibers causing head space issues. That was the issue i mentioned. Occasionally they USED to show up at the gun shows really cheap but now they are gone it seems. I wish they were still cheap and available because i would gladly be the Guinea pig for that build. Mine shot extremely well and was like new. I think i paid maybe $150-$200 in like new condition and a friend still takes a deer with it every year and wont sell it back The rear lugs have some advantages in a SML build IMO because without the machine work on the receiver for the front lugs it could be a very rigid action. Plus we get real lugs not just a "bolt handle lug" like most 22RFs. The rumor is that Rem stopped making them partially because they shot as well as a Rem700 and had a quicker lock time. They sure are not pretty but that can be fixed over time.

How about the Munden .45 Encore. 1600 barrel. 2650-2700 with the 325gr Parker and has to shoot 5" or less with load development before it hits your hands! For a lot less than 7k!
