Got to shoot the 45 some today. To start with I tried a new load that I got from Marty that he and savage shooter had tried or planned to try. I just shot a 5 shot group at 100 yds.It shot ok but was a little slow for me. The first shot went to the right,I think it was because I started with a clean barrel. The the other 4 went close together. The load was IMR 4759/11 grs and A 2015/57 grs.Ionly averaged 2608 fps for 5 shots.I shot the 200 xtp's If they had been the sst the speed would have been a little more. Next was H4198 at 64 grs with 3 shots at 100 and it shot the xtps into 3/4 of and inch so it is still doing well for me. Next I tried again at 100 yds with N120 but used IMR 4198 instead of H It shot an inch for 3 but the fps went way down to2786.I used 54 grs of the IMR 4198 instead of the 53 grs. Now down to the 300 yd mark.Mark and Marty asked me to shoot this load awhile back and today was the fourth range trip I had tried this load at 300 yds.Today it shot 2 3/8 in for 3 shots.I waited a long time between 2 and 3 but the wind wouldn't stop so I shot the 3rd one.Was hopeing the wind would die and I could get a tighter group, but didn't happen. This was group #4 that has gone less than 3 inches at 300 yd. So if you have trouble getting the H4198 to go bang everytime you may want to give this load a try. When you get a load that shoots that consistant at distance it must be pretty good. And should make a great deer load.

Herman you have to toss out that last group as it was only a 3-shot group! Was Richard there today? If he was I am surprised he let you get away with that! ;D

Richard is my Buddie,He lets me get away with some things. Dennis the recoil isn't bad because I use the lead sled, its probably about like shooting a 30/06. Last week I shot my rem 870 with a 3in mag off hand and I thought it broke my shoulder. Was shooting at an egg at 30 yds and the egg got the worst of it.

I agree with you Herman. Those 3" turkey loads in an 870 are brutal. Nice shooting as always and did you mean 64 gr of IMR 4198 instead of 54?

Herman it sounds like you got a little trigger happy Most of us turkey hunters wait until the eggs hatch before shooting.

It was 54 grs with the IMR.I used N120/13 grs and H4198/53 grs at 300 and decided to add one more gr with the IMR because when I tried the IMR by itself (Should have a post on it back aways with 65 grs of IMR verses H4198/64 grs.)gave me close to the same speed. It was a boiled egg that we had in camp. I have a red dot scope on my shotgun and had a shot at a tom but it was shooting straight in the sun and I couldn't see the red dot,so I framed his head in the center of the scope and cut about an inch tree off about 2 ft high and a foot right. So that is why I was shooting the egg to check the scope out I could see the red dot then. I believe if I could have seen the dot we would be eating turkey. I am not much of a turkey hunter I just go a couple days a year just to get out in the woods and hear them gobble and see how many ticks I can collect.

Another thing I forgot to mention about the 120/H4198 (13/53) load tuesday. There was clay bird on the bank at 200 yds so I decided to try it with a 200 xtp. I clicked the scope down to where I thought it should be for 200 and Richard watched to see how close I came to it,he said I hit about 6 inches high so I went down a couple more clicks. Must have hit close to center because we couldn't see any of it left. This was another plus for this load. Savage shooter came up with a good one.
