Back over on the n120-195bx thread, something was bothering me a little but I bit my lip. Then Dave D came to the rescue with his comments on H4198.
Not shooting a .45, I felt a little hesitant saying what Dave d. said. Maybe H4198 acts differently in a smaller bore in different conditions? I have no tests to confirm or deny
And, as Tar12 said, so eloquently I might add....about riding something like you stole it....That sums up my thoughts and experience with H4198 in the .50 cal.
Never a misfire, nothing even close to the speed swings people have reported, no hangfires, nothing but praise.
Having shot probably 10 lbs of this powder, and performed more cold weather, 1st shot accuracy, gun left loaded for days and weeks, you name the test and I've probably done it. Don't even count the several dozen deer laid to rest here....that goes without saying.
Obviously the powder is flawless IMO. What else could be contributing to the flawlessness? Perhaps amounts used, seating pressure, sabot/bullet tightness, not swabbing between shots, FED029A's, putting 2 lands on each petal everytime.
No matter how I feel or no matter what Dave d. says, anyone who has had a "bloop" or saw a velocity gap using a chrono, may be damaged for life. It is easy to loose trust when you see something with your own eyes. Just as easy to be faithful, and "ride something like you stole it" when you find something that works everytime.
I do feel as though personal little habits and components, as well as using enough powder packed very well, and a tight fitting combo in a fouled barrel is probably the difference. 100% ability to deal with any moisture penetration from muzzle or breech is also a factor. Limiting oils and greases to the initial cleaning and then never using anymore untill the next cleaning.
Just a H4198 proponent spouting off......again

I understand your sentiments Wilms. I also feel it has a great deal to do with operator consistency and experience level. There is no substitute for bench/field time.I was scarred for life after using IMR 4227 in my first ML-1 ;D I was as green as it gets concerning smokeless muzzeloading at the time. I did not know there was even a Dougs Message Board! I was all puckered up when I pulled that trigger the first time! ;D That was many moons ago and I have learned that the Savage Ml-II or the Sav./Pac is a fickle female. This long and tumultuous relationship with this fickle woman has brought forward many of her idiosyncrasies. If you listen to her she will reveal her secrets to you! I could have just as easily had a H-4198 affair and been singing praises of love for her but I met N-120 first and have no plans to cheat on her.My current mistress is whispering more N-120 my love...I will keep feeding her N-120 unless she breaks my heart.. ;D

Thank you for setting me on top of the fence, lol. I'm new and have just shot 4759 with no problems so far "knock on wood". I have a .50 ml1 "stock", from what I can tell now, is that either powder is a good choice. For now, my lovely lady will dine at the 4759 cafe. Are we nuts? Greenhorn

I have shot 8 lbs of H4198 and have only had one misfire, of course on a big buck, but luckily was able to get a second shot off and sealed the deal. I was using a Rem 300gr, which is .457" and I think that may have been the problem. I have a very loose bored ss barrel, but it shoots lights out. Since I have gone to the .458" 325ftx and BO, I have never had a problem again. But, with tinkering comes progress, and I have since recessed my breechplugs and then on to duplex, so I have no fear of a misfire again. I guess it only has to happen once!

Man, I hate you guys . You just made me spend more money. ;D I just recently ran out of H-4198 and picked up 2lbs. Then all this about N-120 vs H4198, Tar-12 with his 60gn N-120 single, Richard and TG with their N-110 and N-120 duplexs and N-110 and H322 duplexs. I just ordered 5lbs of N-120 and 2lbs of N-110 from Powder Valley, now i need to pick up some H322 and let the fun begin ;D ;D

Dont hate me Dennis as Panhandle is partially to blame for the N-120 craze in the .45! Sorry Zen I had to spread the blame around a little! ;D

Love my N120 also, but she's getting to be too expensive a girlfriend! Look at the price difference at Powder Alley between her and either H4198 or H322......over $11.00 for ONE pound! I shoot only duplex, and haven't played much with H322 since the .45 conversion. Just may have to look more closely at it or H4198. Sure seems like I got more perceived recoil from H4198 to get bullets to the same speed as duplexing N110 and H322, though.
As for the Sav/PN being fickle, I must have gotten very, very lucky. It seems to be in the mood for accuracy, no matter what I shove in her. ;D ;D

I never tried the H4198 in the .50 but I sure like it in the .45. I really like the R7 in the .50 so I saw no need to try anything else after I found my load. I've never tried the N120 in either becasue I didn't have any but some of you guys are making it awfully tempting. You've got to remember that Wilms is a little biased and that he sprinkles H4198 on his ice cream.

I've heard of feeding dogs bp to make them mean( I don't condone this). But it does make me wonder what H4198 on ice cream does? ;D sorry to be off the post just trying to add humor not to distract I'm never been good at humor so if it is found offensive I apologize. Jon

Whoa!!! That's not me with brain freeze.
DBinNY makes up lots of stories about me....sensationalizes my previous comments about adding gunpowder to my food stuffs.
It's all bunk. Chocolate sprinkles just looks like gunpowder.....especially H4198 with those long grains.
Has DB ever told you guys that he takes classes in quilting? I saw his work once. It's all an envy thing. Yeah, there was a gun in the back round but com'on.....I know a quilt advertisement when I see one.
One of these days when I meet this DB guy, I'm going to show him a real blanket...made from fleece....homemade by a real girl. Then maybe we'll shoot our guns, have a burger and a beer and find someone else to pick on.
(Did I mention that he downsized to a .45? Cheated on 'ole Bess after a long faithful commitment and years of service?) See what I mean?

Sounds good Wilms. Two great powders, good friends and a good laugh. I've got to give Rick a 10 for that one!
