I'm brand new to the forum so this question may have been asked a 100 times, if so sorry. I just bought a Savage ml last season, and thought it would be just like my two friends that both had boughten muzzle loaders in years past. pull it out of the box and clean and shoot. NOT THE CASE!!! After two different jugs of powder and three different brands of primers and still no consistent fire. The rifle will fire sometimes and not fire others. I would think that it was my rifle but me and my brother have had the same problems both rifles were bought at the same time. What the heck is up with our guns. just wondering if anyone else has had this prob. and how you fixed it.

Welcome to the board!
We need more info in order to give suggestions.
What kind of powder (some are harder to ignite than others).
What kind of primer? Smokeless powders are more difficult to ignite than BP or subs. Most of us use magnum primers.

Describe the fails-to-fire. Is the firing pin giving a "click"? Are the primers getting struck? Are the primers igniting but the powder failing/blooping out?

My guess.... Superglide sabots or similar.
The bullet and sabot have to be tight fitting for consistent ignition.

If the primer is "popping" it is not the gun, it is the load combo, Need a bit more info to help. Load, bullet, sabot, etc. will help.

we do need more info to get you on the right course but there are some common things to look at. first look at your primer( if it is not going off) is it dented or just dimpled a little bit? if it is some times just dimpled there are 2 possibilities. first the rear action screw is usually just tad to long and hits on the bottom of the bolt and can keep it from firing right and make it hard to close the bolt. FIX, just file a thread or 2 off the screw and re torque to 25 IN. LBS. second is do you have the accutrigger? if so you must make sure you are getting the sear back when shooting. if you use the joint of your shooting finget and not the tip of your finger the sear may not always be fully disengauged. also if you have the trigger set too light it may release befor the sear is disengauged. if you are using an easy glide saboted bullet, as some have stated, you may not be gettign enough pressure on load to get consistant ignition, usally 40# of pressure to load is what you need. Primers, use a 209 shot gun primer, not the ones designed for inline. example as the T-7 primers. they are really not designed for smokless powder. most here use a 209 m or magnum primer to get proper ignition, such as a FED 209 A or a CCI 209 M.
i do recomend you look in the tips and hind and start with the basics with the thorough cleaning and ways to prevent the ventliner and breech plug from getting stuck.
hope this helps and doesnt overwelm. provide us with some more info and we can get specific! welcome to the board!

Yes, what Whyohe and every above said. IF YOUR PRIMER IS GOING OFF MAKE SURE YOU RESEAT THE LOAD BEFORE TRYING TO FIRE YOUR GUN AGAIN. If you fail to reseat the charge and bullet you could bulge the barrel or worse. I see from your post that your are a female, these savage's need quite a bit of loading force to be reliable. I use both hands on the ramrod and i am a pretty big guy, so it may take all you have to seat a load properly. Also the book loads are easiest to ignite, i have used 5744 and n110. The 5744 seems to ignite the easiest and is a little easier for beginners to get a hunting load going. Search this board, do not give up and i am sure you will get your savage shooting in a short time. Good luck.

If you feel you really would like to talk to someone in person? Send me a PM and I will give you my phone number. And welcome to the board. You are surely not the first one who has had this problem. Smoke less ML'ing is a totally different animal than BP! Once you get the hand of it, you will be glad you bought a Savage. Richard

The first thing on the diagnostic tree is are the primers getting hit? I was getting at least one guy a month that couldn't make the switch to the Accutrigger. It takes some finger training. If your popping primers then we have to look at load data.
