I have it together, Got the barrel last week and it looks good, put it together saturday. McGowen .45 caliber, 26" varmet contour, 1-18" twist. Shot it Sunday a couple times to get it on paper, this is the first smokeless I have heard and it sounds like a regular rifle going off. Now all I need is some time to get to the range and see how it shoots at 100 and 200yds.

That should tell you in short order how it is going to shoot. 1 - 18 twist should lend itself to good results with heavier bullets. Good luck with it. Richard

Richard, Do you have any suggestions on "breaking in a new barrel"? Markb317 your gun looks very nice and I wish you best of luck with it. It sounds like a rifle because it is a rifle, lol. I saw videos of the mll2 shooting caribou and other game and it seemed like the hunters were shooting sparkler loads or something ,sure didn't sound right. Hope you got a cut off the barrel , you'll be sending it to swinglock before you know it. The sabotless way is hard way not to go to, especially if you want to shoot 1/4 mile .Enjoy your gun and by all means show us your groups because there are numerous members including me to see how the mcgowen barrel is going to perform. You must know by now if you have ANY questions of help you have the best backup on the planet is here. Good luck and be safe, Greenhorn

Greenhorn............There is not much in the way of break-in with a custom barrel, or for that matter, even a Savage barrel when shooting with sabots............or even without sabots! All I would do, if anything, is give it a light scrubbing with JB bore cleaner. Those plastic sabots will do Nothing, zip, zero! for altering the interior of the barrel In a center fire rifle, the critical area in breaking in a new barrel is the "throat"..........which is not present in a ML. When a reamer cuts a chamber and the throat area of barrel, there can be some dragging as the reamer cuts thru the rifling in forming the throat. This may leave a little rough area in the throat. After I have cut a chamber, I just take a patch with some 500 grit lapping compound and run it in just to the throat and scrub it a few strokes to remove any loose metal. Being a ML....................this is totally un necessary. The barrel maker has lapped that barrel smooth and your sabots will not improve it. Just go and shoot it and enjoy! Oh!.........and if it is a Savage barrel with all those bumps in the lands and groves? ?? You can JB it till the cows come home and you will not wear them down! ;D This is why you spend the big bucks for a custom barrel! Richard

Brownells has a sabot cleaner. Tried to do some deep cleaning with the smelly solvent and have not seen any plastic come out of the barrel, 45 McGowen. Almost think cleaning might be a waste of time, time will tell?
