I have a chance at a NULA in 50cal but i really want a 45cal. Its a great deal but a 1-32 twist isn't at the top of my list. I would prefer to convert it to a 45 Pacnor.
I know very little about them other than they are light and accurate so any info would be very helpful.

Ok thank you, i just bought it if he agrees to waiting till Friday for payment. The $450 i have extra atm is for a 45cal for the Savage so i guess i can leave it as a 50cal and hunt with it. Then convert the Savage into a 45cal range queen.
Do these have locking lugs like a CF conversion or early Savage? They appear to be built on the Model 20 rimfire action so im guessing the answer is no. I have no idea how the breach plug is designed either so its all new to me except i want a light weight SML for hunting.
Im also guessing i should use the SMI load data (to start) since the 1-32 twist and the barrel maker (Douglas) are the same.
Thank you for a quick response. I had to grab it quick or miss out.

:)scott neither the ml2 nor rem 700ml have locking lugs so no worry there.i believe guys have nulas in .45 so i would think no matter what barrel you put on it will be ok.goodluck

I was curious about the design since there is very little info. Center fire SML conversions have lugs in front so i wasn't sure if a NULA did or did not. Early Savages with the "modules did also IIRC. I know my MLII does not.
The action is short and light. That is my main reason for wanting one. Recoil doesn't bother me at all while hunting and top end fps doesn't matter as long as its a good shooter. Reviews seem to indicate they shoot fine out of the box.
I guess i will dig through the MM archives and see what i can learn.
Thank you for your input

The NULA uses Melvin's rimfire action. Mine is a 50 cal as he quit building 45 cal because he didn't want anyone shooting them sabotless or so I have been told. My rifle didn't shoot everything well right out of the box. But I got some loads from Melvin and some from another web site and now it shoots very similarly to my Pac Nor 45. My rifle weighs right at 7 lbs with a heavy scope, and sling. I carry a take down ramrod to load in the field as I didn't like the ramrod thimble on the barrel. No fancy paint jobs for me either, Just plain black. It is a pleasure to carry in rough terrain. No locking lugs on the bolt. The breech plug screws out with a socket. I don't remember the size off hand.

He agreed to the deal and i will be getting it next week. It was too good of a deal to pass up and now i can have two smokeless MLs within my budget.
Ive decided to keep it as a 50cal and use my Savage for the 45cal conversion. Staying with a proven 45cal platform makes the most sense to me.
Thank you for all the help.

GM, Congrats on your new ULA! I was hoping that you didn't over think on that too much. I see you've made your decision on the direction of you rifle builds. You may want to take another step if you already haven't and that's to contact NULA. They may be better equipped to re-barrel one of their own rifles. IIRC both Nula and Douglas are located in West (By GOD) Virginia and I would think that NULA would be able to aquire a .45 barrel in any twist that they wanted for you. Just thinking aloud. Congrats again. Ambrose

I was planning on contacting NULA anyway just for the knowledge Melvin may be able to offer. If i went 45 i would want a custom 1-24 twist just for kicks and sabot use only. I will save that for another day when i have more first hand experience with "uncharted territory".
