I placed my order for a DD standard from Pac-Nor yesterday. All of the components that I currently have are for the .50 cal. While I am enduring the 12 week wait, I want to order some .45 cal components. At this point I am only interested in using it for whitetailed deer. I have come to expect shots from 50 to 250 yards. Can you guys clue me in on a good bullet, sabot, powder, primer combination to start with?
Blessings, Bill

Stock up on the Harvester 45 cal smooth blue sabot, part # 4540B. They are used with most loads. The Barnes 195 gr MZ FB is a great bullet that shoots very well out of most Pacnors. Buy directtly from Barnes and you get them lose and they will be the new flat base bullet,60.00 for 75 bullets IIRC. H 4198 powder is hard to beat. Mag primers from fed or cci are also recommended. Hope you enjoy your new toy Rusty

Get you some Hornady 200g .40 cal XTP's to get it dialed in with the sabots that deadon mentioned then tweak your final loads to the 195 Barnes or Hornady 200 SST and you'll have yourself a 250 yd deer killing machine.

As these guys already pointed out, my humble opinion too is that you will not find anything dramatically better than H4198, CCIM primer, Smooth blue harvester sabot, barnes 195's(ordered directly from Barnes). All Pacs that I know of shoot this combo good for deer to 250. It is the DD recipe for success with the Pacnors. Follow these components exactly and it will be Tough to beat.

tiswell...........you have gotten a lot of good information. Don't neglect to look in the loads section as I have listed a ton of loads with different powders. I would rate H-4198 as probably the best single powder but there are other "keepers" also. Just from me personally, don't get hung up on the Mag. primers. Not saying they don't work, but all my load development has been with the standard Winchester 209 primer and have found no reason to change...............I tried all the others? Just my opinion! Richard Interesting I guess I haven't been paying enough attention. I did not know you were using Winchester standerd 209 primers. Jon

60 grn of 4198 with the components mentioned is a good starting place, its a very accurate load in most pacnors

The Barnes part numbers are 40016 (15 pack) and 40052 (24 pack). Part #'s have not changed. BUT be sure to check that the lot numbers are 4272 or later. Lot 4272 is the first lot number used when all the 195bx went to the flat flat base, no radius. These are the ONLY ones they make now. Just watch out for "old" stock at some places still floating around that have the same part #'s. From what I have tested them they shoot really great. Lot # 4272 or GREATER!!!

Here is the email I got from Ty Herrington (Barnes) last week>
Hi Mark,We have redesigned the existing 195gr 45 cal MZ bullet to have less radius where the shank meets the base. This has increased the bearing surface of the base of the bullet and seems to help those that drive it to extreme pressures. From this point on we’ll only make the new version. You can tell it’s the newer design if the lot number is 4272 or greater. The part number 40016 (15pkg) & 40052 (24pkg) will not change. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.
Thanks, Ty
