for my 11 yr old 100 pound son, what is the lightest load of either vitavouri 110 or accurate arms 5744 he could use. 250 gr hornady xtp. would like a 150 yard range, ethical whitetail load. he has a new ss with thumbhole and 3x9 scope thanks

I can't give you th numbers but you are a wise father to not have him become recoil sensitive/flinching and losing interest by heavy loads. I believe Tar12 had some light loads for his daughter that worked well. You might PM him.

I have used 30 gr of 4759 under bullets ranging from 185 XTPs to 333 gr Hardcasts. I found very good accuracy with all loads. I killed 4 deer 2 seasons ago with the hardcasts from 30-100 yds.
You have many many options here to get the results you are looking for at .243 recoil levels.

36 grns of either one. I really would not go any less than this. My daughter was 11 or 12 in the following pic. I started her out at 34 grns and as soon as she realized she was not going to die I quickly bumped it up in 2 grn increments until she now shoots 42 grn of N110 and 44 grns of 5744. Her furthest shot with the 36 grn of 5744 was @ 80 yds on a fairily large broad side doe.First photo was 36 grns of N110,RCR,250 grn XTP. This buck was taken @ 80 yds last year with 38 grns of 5744,RCR,250 grn XTP.

My ML II likes 5744 but she likes 41gr the best w/ 250gr SST's. I tried alot of different powders and totally skipped the start load for 5744 for quite a while. Once I slowed her down alittle bit she really came into her own. Sure Im not winning any velocity races with it but she shoots 1 1/4" 5 shot groups consistantly at 100yds. (Makes me happy ) Tar12, my daughter is 11 now and I've got her shooting mine but she hasn't brought herself to shoot a deer yet. That's OK because her two brothers keep me busy enough. They shoot any deer that comes into the field. Passing the tradition down is what its all about and it keeps us from getting hungry! ;D

One of my MLIIs has a sweet spot at 38 gr of 4759 and 250SST. Light recoil and very accurate. 10

my son was shooting 30grand 32 gr of 4759sr/250 sst, his groups are 1.5 inch at 100 yards. he is 8 and about 65lbs and he has no problem at all with this load.

thanks for the replies So in summary, for N110 or AA 5744, what are the lightest loads for a 250 gn XTP to get accurate results at 150 yards? These are the supplies I have thanks

I use 44 grains of 5744 for myself. I use 41 grains of 5744 for my 12 year old little brother (Big Brothers/Big Sisters). We are pushing a bigger bullet though (300 gr barnes original). He also uses a shoulder pad. He really likes the load and doesn¡¦t flinch. I trained him on the .22 though. Now he doesn¡¦t want to shoot anything but the big boy gun. Maybe if I took the pad away my range costs would go back downƒº The lightest load I¡¦ve seen people post about was 34 grains of 5744 and they seemed real happy with it a couple months back. I saw someone above posted they use 36 grains, and also 34 at one point. That¡¦s probably where I would start.
If you really want out to 150 yards I¡¦d think you would want a bit more though. I probably wouldn¡¦t go below 40 at that range, but I really really like 2 holes in my deer for quick drainage purposes. In this case it may be unnecessary as the soft load would take priority. Maybe 38 grains?

Pasthrough, As I suggested 34 grns of either to start. If you are looking for 2 holes neither one of these powders in the lower doses will do it reliabily at 150 or less for that matter. They have enough energy to kill make no mistake.
