Gentlemen, I just received an email from Mr Wakeman. I had asked him if he tried the 325 grain Hornady FTX bullets, and why he never mentions the Harvester BCR sabot. He stated that the 325 are over the weight limit for the 10ML11 and that the Harvester BCR sabots can produce "bloopers" in cold weather. Hmmmmmmmmm any thoughts on this please. Thanks Mark

They aren't necessarily over another manufacturer's weight limit, but as far as the Savage 10ML-II: Savage's stance has always been clear: "250 - 300 saboted rounds only for smokeless." Savage has never published loads for bullets any heavier than 300 saboted bullets with smokeless.
As for Harvester sabots, by all means shoot whatever works best in your rifle. In fact, contingent on application, Del Ramsey has even suggested Harvesters from time to time.
With sabots, there is no good substitute for geometry.

I may be wrong, but I never saw a weight LIMIT from Savage. They have a few recommended loads, but do not limit the user to those loads or bullets.
IIRC they did limit smokeless to loads using sabots only.

Gentlemen, Mr Wakeman stated that"Bloopers in cold weather are an issue with Harvesters." I am just curious if anyone has had issues with "bloopers" in cold weather? Thanks Guys

I use them and have hunted in temps as low as -15 with 4759 and have never had a blooper or misfire.

Maybe if you used a BCR with a .451-.452 bullet you might be loose enough to get a blooper in cold weather out of a 10ML. We found out long ago that the BCR works with the .458 bullets in the 10ML and is alternative to the orange MMP. The RCR is the one to use with the .451-.452 bullets.

I agree cold weather bloopers are much more fit than brand of sabot dependent. Choosing the wrong components is user error, not a specific manufacturer.

I have also found that when testing the MMP and Harvester side by side it is the MMP that starts to not handle the cold as well as the Harvester. I shot both side by side in sixty degree weather using the same loads and got the same results, but when I shot in the 30's and 40's that is where the MMP fell short with my groups opening up, but not the Harvesters they were still the same size groups.
I also agree bloopers are not sabot related they are sabot/bullet fit related. I never had a blooper with either the MMP or the Harvester using .458 bullets knurled to proper size and black sabots of each type.
Hope this helps,

I use orange MMP, also black BCR sabots, with the 400 gr. Barnes Buster Bullets, works fine I also use a fiber wad, that Sir Edge sent me, in cooler weather I'll do away with the wad. since the pressure is good, it is not a problem. From the Savage,s view point, they want to set standards, I think they know its only human nature to against such standards, As for myself, I fellow Ricks recommendations, with only slight increases, and than only after checking with Edge as a safe pressure. If I get to put the buster at 2147FPS in the boiler room on a Brownie, he just might object to my using a 400 gr. bullet, but not for long

I will put it on my things to test list. Just never got very cold this year. I suppose I would be certifiable if I would complain about the mild winter here.

Perhaps Randy Wakeman will explain how he came to such a conclusion. After numerous test? Seems to me that most here feel the Harvester brand of sabot is more accurate and reliable plus better durability.

After discovering Harvester sabots I will never put another MMP down the bore again. The Harvesters are way more consisitant and stand up to heat better,IMO. Never had a blooper with Harvester. Tight is right regardless of sabot used.

Had fliers all the time with MMP orange sabots and .458's. Measured 50 ea and found about 1/2 about the correct size and fit in the barrel. The other half was either loose or sloppy and you could tell when loading. Verticle stringing went away with Harvesters. Never had any cold weather problems with Harvesters either.
