I should be recieving my SMI barrel soon, it is a 50 cal 1 in 36 twist. Any favorite loads out there. Their website likes 4198 and .458 bullets. 4198 is hard to find in my area, just wondering what others are using. Thanks.

I have one and love it. (Also have a 10ml'r) Both great rifles. Suggest you look at the Savage 10ml loads and find a powder available to you and try some of the various combinations until you find the powder, bullet, and sabot or sabot-less combination your barrel likes. Remember, weigh all your powder charges, for safety and repeatability.

I've only ever used N110 in my .50 1:22, 42gr is where I'm at.

I have an SMI in .50 on my Savage action. It did MUCH better with the SMI recommended loads than the standard ones we use in the stock Savage. Just letting you know to avoid possible disappointments.

It depends on the vent. Back in the early days SMI used 2015 which matched the 28" barrel but the vent was much larger to get good ignition. If you tried faster powders with hot primers it didn't work to well. A lot of guys had SMI build the breechplug using Savage vents which helped using Savage book loads.

My 50 cal. SMI barrel shoots 250 grain Hornady, SMI sabot, CCI 209m primer and 45 grains of 5744 into 1.5 inches at 100 yards all day long.

I have an older SMI also with the 28" Douglas barrel, 1 in 36" twist. It shoots 65 gr of H4198 with the 250 gr SST very well. It came with a .060 flash hole plug and I changed to the vent liner plug.

Anybody try the Accurate XMR 2015 powder? It is listed in their load charts and I can get it locally. What kind of bullets is everyone shooting? I will post some pics when I get it done, I have a boyds laminated thumbhole stock for it and I think it will look pretty sharp.

It was a book powder back in the early days of the Savage. With the Savage set-up (tight vent and shorter barrel) you had ignition problems and low performance compared to say N110, 5744 or 4759. In the early days it was the only powder SMI used and IIRC it was the powder for the Bad Bull before they went to 4350 but your looking at 28" barrels and huge vents. If my memory serves me well 2015 worked better with 300gr bullets and you had to use a ton (like 70grs) to get the speed up to what you could get with 40grs of faster book powders. Ignition problems and cold weather performance killed it in the 10ML and it was dropped from the list of book powders early just like 4227.
