I am guessing that if you are using a barrel end protector of some sort and are getting a tiny round hole thru it, the bullet is making that hole and the protector is not "blowing away" ahead of the bullet.
Double lapped electrical or duct tape is fairly thick and tough. As some bullets are somewhat fragile at high muzzle velocity, it seems there could be some degrading effect on the bullet and/or a velocity loss if the bullet actually contacts the barrel cover tape and passes thru it. This scenario is essentially the equivalent of shooting thru an obstacle before hitting your intended target. Using the thick and tough tape sounds a bit risky.

:DThis is not really a joke I used to do a lot of riding (bikes) One of the P's of one club thats what he wore to the point that his wife got him a couple of pair with a third leg. I'm sure that by today there are things better but it worked well at the time. ;D ;D ;D Jon
