I think most are waiting for savage-barrels.com to start taking orders for the DMB barrels. I know I can save $ by headspacing myself and not shipping actions etc. to them.

they are not charging me for the install as far as I can tell 360.00 total/ fluted. my barrel order was to savagebarrels for a dmb #2 fluted and john had me ship it to mcgowen. I told John several guys here will be watching and waiting in the wings to see how these three little pigs turn out... I am kind of anxious myself.
midway got in the .186 callahan lugs in today, they notified me they had shipped them to mcgowen. the actions will arrive wed according to ups tracking so now comes the wait. these things are going to look wierd with these Knox Axiom stocks. nonconventional for sure....Bill

I am waiting to hear back from Jon. My order will be in as soon as they get the DMB barrels set up. I too am going to try to headspace it myself.

I guess Im just impatient, it will be interesting to see how the 6 groove fares against the 8 groove. If they dont shoot well there will be three non shooters and three dissapointed owners. if they do well i already have two more guys wanting one.

When the weather breaks hopefully a whole lot of shooting will be going on and the results can be posted. Keep us informed. I also saw mentioned another barrel so there may be several testing.

All I know at this point is that Jon told more than one member that he was not yet ready for DMB barrel orders. Mike Dawson listed in the "new company thread" that he was paying McGowen $75 to assemble and headspace his parts on an order placed directly with McGowen. I'm not sure if your parts will be headspaced the DMB method or not. I have an e-mail in to Jon checking if he's heard if McGowen has the specs in the computers yet. I had them shooting for about .008" of material to come off the breechplug for proper headspace. Plus they were programing in the two contours.

I explained to John the headspace procedure and gave Mcgowen my ph # so hopefully they will get it right. they should be able to use mine as guniea pigs to get the specs right or they might already have someone elses, i dont know. I think someone mentioned they had sent them all the parts they needed so the ball should be rolling......Bill

Maybe that's the plan to test the headspace procedure on you guns. Jon hasn't said anything to me about the plan. Dan at McGowen said they were using Mike Dawsons parts to get the measurements for getting the machines programed to get the DMB barrel to come up with the .008" too tight spec so customers can do their own.

So is doing all this ourselves going to save us $75 plus shipping on the barrles? If so, that makes a great price into an unbelievable price!

All I know is that Mike Dawson stated that he was paying $75 for assembly. I know that if we headspace them ourselves which is the plan with a full DMB barrel we pay no fitting/assy fee, plus we don't have the expense of shipping our parts to them to be fitted/headspaced.

So it was $360 + $75 if they put it together? That's a bit more than I originally thought. Not that I would have them put it together, fishhawk will be getting mine as soon as all is worked out.

The $360 price does include fluting, A DMB barrel should be somewhere near $275 non-fluted.

I emailed him before we started all the DMB stuff, and this is what they replied with:
The cost for the complete pre-fit is $265.00, fluting is $100.00 and $15.00 for S/H.
I'm not sure what pre-fitting is, but I assumed (incorrectly I guess) that would include headspacing and assembly.

I've never understood why fluting is so expensive. It's done on a machine using cooloing agent, and doesn't seem that labor intensive. I wonder if it's just the going rate. At more than a third of original barrel cost, I'm debating leaving the fluting off. Any thoughts?

It is primarily looks. I like it and am going to get it on my next barrel but it doesn't help accuracry one iota in my opinion.

might help cooling a little via more surface area and will lose some weight, although nothing really significant but it really helps in sex appeal.... I am going to try to get Mcgowen to weigh one of the barrels before it gets fluted to see how much difference there is .....Bill
