Need to go to town and get a scope for my Ruger Super Redhawk 44 mag with a 7 1/2" barell. Shooting 100 yards and under, what do you guys suggest. I guess there is really no certain amount I want to spend, it will be used for deer hunting mostly, maybe a bear hunt also.

I like a 2x Leupold, had one that held zero for years on a Super Blackhawk. Big field of view helps alot as well.

I talked with the smith today at the big goose store about scope's. He told me he had put on 10 or better Burris 2x7 handgun scope's and everybody really loved them..not a failure in all of them. Since I have a new one (SRH) he has my attention

Spend as much as you can on the optics. 2x is what I have on mine. Burris does make good glass for handguns. mike

I've got a Redhawk in .480 Ruger. I put a 4X Leupold on mine and I've never had any problems with it. The Leupold techs suggest you torque your rings to 15-17in/lbs (I always go 25in/lbs) and make sure you loctite her down. ;D

I blew a Burris on my Rem XP 100 in 7mm-08, so not a big fan here.

I had a 3x12 Burris on a Savage Striker 260 Rem. That scope is pretty much the top choice for high power handguns. 2x will give you the widest field of view. My 454 super red hawk wears a 2x Nikon but its an older one that was made in Japan. The newer Nikon's are made in Malaysia and are junk from what i hear. If I was buying a handgun scope now for a large caliber it would be either a Burris, Leupold or Bushnell Elite. Mike

That was a 3x12 Burris that blew on the 7mm-08, but in all fairness that gun also blew a Leupold 2.5x8. I had a Ken Farrell base with Warne rings so I was confident it was not my ring and base set up. I was on another forum discussing my woes and was told for some reason that the xp-100R in 7mm-08 was notorious for being hard on scopes. Both of those scopes blew at about the 75 rd mark. I was also told that the best option was to put a muzzle brake on it, as most of the hard core shooters that used the 7mm-08 XP100R ended up doing. The pistol was a very good shooter when the glass was right, it was moa or better all day long with Fed Fusion ammo. However I was a little disappointed in the speed I was getting from it, and found it to be of no real advantage for long range white tails over the Savage 10MLII I was using at the time. I had an old Tasco 2x years ago that held zero forever on a 357 mag Colt that was very good, as well as the 2x Leupold on my 44 and another just like it I set up for my brother in law. Even though I am not a Burris fan, on the right gun I might be willing to try one again. Mike mentioned the Bushnell Elite, I am becoming quite the Bushnell Elite fan for rifles as I have mounted 3 in the last couple years and been very pleased with all aspects of them. I have never used a Bushnell Elite in a handgun scope, but if they are as good as the rifle models I would certainly consider one.
Mike -do you have an Elite on a handgun? If so can you comment on the set up? Thx D

Rman,
No I don't have a gun with a Elite but like you Ive had very good luck with them on rifles and muzzle loaders. The only scoped handgun I have now is the 454 and its wears the Japan made Nikon. Ive shot that gun probably 800 rounds or more using the Nikon with no ill effects. Mike

I have an older M8 2x Leupold on my Redhawk. Typical Leupold clarity.

I just went and read the review's on cabelas site about Burris. They had 23 review's I think. It seems that agter 2007 they got terrible review's. It seem's from there on was a turning point. Leupold's got great review's and an overall rating of 4.8. I am thinking harder now.

I have an old Elite (B&L, before they had the Bushnell label on it) on my Encore 7-08, and it has held up very well. Even dropped it out of the stand once. No effect. I've used a Burris as well, but mine was made around 2003. I've also heard very good reports on the Leupold.
One thing about it, a 44 revolver is hard on scopes. 100yds and under, you're probably going to want something in the 2x to 4x range. I'd stick with an Elite or a Leupold.
