Not sure this fits in modern firearms but, I have 4 Russian rifles in 7.62x54r: 2-91/30s, (1925,1943); M44, (1945); SVT-40 (1940). They seem to all shoot 10" high even out to 150 yds. (iron sights of course). I've been using 68' surplus from Czechoslovakia light ball 149 gr FMJ. After slugging the barrels, I'm getting .313 for bore size. The bullet dia. is running .310 so I should be ok, although I'm going to reload some 174 grain .311's shortly. The standard military round was around 175 grs, so I'm wondering if the added weight will drop them closer to center. Horizontal is perfect.

I have fooled around with Mosin Nagants, SVT 40's, and the Dragunov. However I have never fired the light czech ammo and have never had the problem with them shooting so high. However I would keep in mind that most rifles of this ere were calibrated for a 6 O'clock hold, so that might account for some of the high impact as you perceive it, but I would not think it would be 10 inches at 100 yds. More like 3 inches. Anyway after giving this considerable thought I just plain do not know what to tell you other then to try the original heavy Russian ammo and see how it does. If it still shoots high, you are probably going to have to get a higher front sight.

Just received some 174 gr Brown Bear ammo and shot a handful of rounds at 60 yds and "shazam!", it was only hitting about 4" high. I think I may be on to something. I'll pull a few Czech bullets and reload with new powder and heavier round.

Try that 174 at 200 yds, bet you might find out your zero point.

In your Mosin try this- Winchester brass, win primer, Hornady 303 cal(.312), 174gn RN interlock, 50gn IMR 4350, OAL 2.835

Check out this site (Parallaxbills Curio and Relic forum) for everything Mosin as well as most other military rifles. It was my first forum home. It's a great bunch of guys and wealth of information. Just don't talk about chopping original military rifles as they frown on that mindset.

Thanks...I have to check this site out. I'm the same way when it comes to military arms...other than a good cleaning, I leave everything as intended. The "Bubba" factor gets heated discussion on some forums.
